The Auchi Kingdom and her relations with two external powers, the Nupe and British: 1800-1960

Abstract:

This research focuses on the history of Auchi Kingdom and her relation with two external powers from 1800 to 1960. It examines the unique history of Auchi Kingdom, its customs and traditions over a period of one hundred and sixty years. The research examines the tradition of origin of the kingdom and explains its position as part of the Afemai region of Etsako West Local Government Area (L.G.A) of Edo State, Nigeria. The research traces the history of the kingdom from the time the Nupe arrived, to the time they traded in slaves and eventually conquered Auchi Kingdom and introduced a monarchical kind of administration and other socio-cultural practices. With the collapse of the Nupe administration in 1897, the British government established a firm control over Auchi Kingdom. The research also examines the socio-political and economic development that took place in the kingdom under the British colonial rule from 1897 to1960. The people evolved a complex, stable, social, political and religious institutions under the able leadership of King Oshiogbele Momoh Idaoh as a result of their contact with the Nupe and the British. It was during the reign of King Oshiogbele Momoh Idao as the Otaru of auchi kingdom that the kingdom witnessed significant changes and growth because he was very passionate about his people. This dissertation also highlights the colonial experience of Auchi people and their reaction to the Nupe and British occupation of their land. The impact of Nupe and British rule and their activities as agents of change in the lives of the people and the developments that occurred are also examined. This dissertation highlights the continuity of some indigenous customs and traditions of the Auchi people and their adoption and continuity of both Nupe and British-imposed custom. Furthermore, this work examines the customs and traditions of Auchi, chieftaincy titles, Uchi day festival, roles of women in the household and in the community and infrastructural development over the period. The introduction of Islam and Christianity was also examined. The research work also examines the extent to which the contact of the Kingdom with the two external powers was beneficial to the inhabitants. Notable personalities and dignitaries of Auchi Kingdom were interviewed..It should also be noted that Auchi Kingdom has developed into a mega socio- economic and political force to be reckoned with in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State in particular and Nigeria as a whole, as a result of the activities and determination of an agent of modernity and change, King Oshiogbele Momoh Idaoh. There was extensive use of both primary and secondary sources to achieve viable results. An interdisciplinary approach was adopted during the sieving of the enormous information in order to achieve historical objectivity.

Tento výzkum se zaměřuje na historii království Auchi a její vztah ke dvěma vnějším mocnostem od roku 1800 do roku 1960. Zkoumá jedinečnou historii království Auchi, jeho zvyky a tradice v období sto šedesáti let. Výzkum zkoumá tradici původu království a vysvětluje jeho postavení jako součásti regionu Afemai v Etsako West Local Government Area (L.G.A) státu Edo v Nigérii. Výzkum sleduje historii království od doby, kdy dorazili Nupe, do doby, kdy obchodovali s otroky a nakonec dobyli království Auchi a zavedli monarchický druh správy a další sociokulturní praktiky. S kolapsem vlády Nupe v roce 1897 britská vláda vytvořila pevnou kontrolu nad královstvím Auchi. Výzkum také zkoumá sociálně-politický a ekonomický vývoj, který probíhal v království pod britskou koloniální nadvládou v letech 1897 až 1960. Lidé vyvinuli komplexní, stabilní, sociální, politické a náboženské instituce pod schopným vedením krále Oshiogbele Momoh Idaoh v důsledku jejich kontaktu s Nupe a Brity. Bylo to za vlády krále Oshiogbele Momoh Idao jako Otaru z království Auchi, kdy bylo království svědkem významných změn a růstu, protože byl velmi vášnivý pro svůj lid. Tato disertační práce také zdůrazňuje koloniální zkušenost lidí Auchi a jejich reakci na Nupe a britskou okupaci jejich země. Zkoumá se také dopad Nupe a britské nadvlády a jejich činnosti jako činitelů změny v životech lidí a vývoje, který nastal. Tato disertační práce zdůrazňuje kontinuitu některých domorodých zvyků a tradic lidí Auchi a jejich přijetí a kontinuitu jak Nupe, tak zvyků zavedených Brity. Dále se tato práce zabývá zvyky a tradicemi Auchi, náčelnickými tituly, festivalem Uchi day, rolí žen v domácnosti a ve společnosti a rozvojem infrastruktury v daném období. Zkoumáno bylo také zavedení islámu a křesťanství. Výzkumná práce také zkoumá, do jaké míry byl kontakt Království s oběma vnějšími mocnostmi pro obyvatele přínosný. Byly provedeny rozhovory s významnými osobnostmi a hodnostáři království Auchi. Je třeba také poznamenat, že království Auchi se vyvinulo v mega socioekonomickou a politickou sílu, se kterou je třeba počítat zejména v oblasti místní správy Etsako West státu Edo a v Nigérii jako celku. , jako výsledek činnosti a odhodlání agenta modernity a změny, krále Oshiogbele Momoh Idaoh. K dosažení životaschopných výsledků se hojně využívaly primární i sekundární zdroje. Při prosévání obrovského množství informací byl přijat interdisciplinární přístup za účelem dosažení historické objektivity.
