Influence of Cultural Stereotypes on the Diagnosis of Autism in Girls

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem diskriminace ženského těla a psychiky v západní medicíně z pohledu medicínské antropologie. Teoretické východisko práce tvoří diskuse o tom, jak byly poznatky současné medicíny vytvořeny na mužském těle a testovány opět na mužském těle. V souvislosti s autismem se uvádí 1 dívka s poruchou autistického spektra na 5 chlapců. Opravdu je vyšší výskyt autismu mezi chlapci? Jakto, když autismus není nemoc vázaná na chromozom Y/X? Či snad při diagnostikování (nebo nediagnostikování) hrají svou roli stereotypy spojené s rozdílnými požadavky na chlapce a dívku během jejich dětství? Někteří autoři poukazují na to, že autismus u dívek může vypadat jinak, proto jsou často špatně diagnostikované. Z tohoto úhlu pohledu v této práci nastíním současnou diskusi o autismu v České republice. Je nižší výskyt autismu u dívek spojen s rozdílnými požadavky na to, co medicína či rodičovské příručky označují jako správný vývoj?

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of discrimination of the female body and psyche in Western medicine from the perspective of anthropology of medicine. The theoretical basis of the work is a discussion of how the findings of contemporary medicine were created on the male bodies and tested again on the male bodies. In connection with autism, 1 girl with an autism spectrum disorder is mentioned per 5 boys. Is there really a higher incidence of autism among boys? Why might this be so, when autism is not a Y/X chromosome-linked disease? Or do stereotypes associated with different demands on boys and girls during their childhood play a role in diagnosing (or not diagnosing)? Some authors state that autism in girls may look different, so they are often misdiagnosed. From this point of view, the student will outline the current discussion about autism in the Czech Republic. Is the lower incidence of autism in girls associated with different requirements for what medicine or parenting manuals refer to as proper development? The research question of the diploma thesis asks whether cultural stereotypes influence the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders.
