Perception of online gaming addiction in excessive gamers

Abstract:

Tato práce je sekundární analýzou zkušeností excesivních hráčů se závislostí na online hrách. Jejím cílem je prozkoumání způsobu, jakým hráči vnímají závislost na online hrách, jaká je jejich zkušenost s problematickým hraním a jejich vlastní vymezení této závislosti. Úvodní část práce je zaměřena na látkové a behaviorální závislosti, specifika závislosti na počítačových hrách a motivace a rizikové faktory závislosti s ohledem na subjektivní prožívání hráčů. Analýza proběhla na výzkumném souboru osmi hráčů, z nichž je šest mužů a dvě ženy ve věku 23 až 36 let pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Data byla sesbírána formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. Z analýzy vyplynulo sedm témat, kterými jsou: Postoj ke hře a závislosti; Závislost jako „uvěznění v imaginárním světě“; Konflikty s blízkými a porozumění s hráči; Pocit kontroly nebo v moci hry; Nejdřív práce, pak zábava?; Hraní jako prostředek k vyrovnání se s realitou; Investice jako motivace ke hře. Jako výsledky jsou prezentovaná tato témata a také shrnutí zkušeností jednotlivých respondentů. V závěru jsou tyto výsledky a vzešlá subjektivní kritéria závislosti na online hrách diskutována v kontextu dosavadních zjištění a také jsou uvedeny limity práce.

Abstract:

This paper is a secondary analysis of excessive players‘ experience with internet gaming disorder. The aim of this study is to explore the way players perceive addiction to online games, what is their experience with problematic gaming, and their own definition of this addiction. The introductory part is focused on substance and behavioral addictions, the specifics of internet gaming disorder, and motivation and risk factors of addiction in relation to the subjective experience of players. The analysis, using interpretative phenomenological analysis, was conducted on the research sample consisting of eight players, six men and two women aged 23-36 years. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The analysis showed seven themes, which are: Attitude to the game and addiction; Addiction as “being trapped in an imaginary world”; Conflicts with loved ones and understanding from players; Feeling of control or controlled by the game; Work first, then fun?; Playing as a means of coping with reality; Investment as the motivation to play. These themes are presented as results along with summaries of the individual respondents’ experience. In the end these themes and the subjective criteria for internet gaming disorder that emerged are discussed in the context of present findings and limitations of this study are also stated.
