Synthesis and Applications of Some Photoactivatable Compounds

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se skládá ze čtyř projektů, které se zabývají syntézou a aplikacemi fotoaktivovatelných sloučenin. Náplní prvního projektu byla syntéza a charakterizace nových fenylselanyl- and phenyltellanyl- analogů BODIPY chromoforu. Pomocí fluorescenční a tranzientní spektroskopie byly studovány fotofyzikální vlastnosti těchto analogů a získané údaje byly porovnány s údaji pro deriváty BODIPY obsahující atomy iodu a chloru. Kvantová účinnost fluorescence byla v případě nových derivátů nižší, zatímco kvantová účinnost mezisystémového přechodu rostla v pořadí H→Cl→Se/I→Te substituce v důsledku efektu těžkého atomu. 3-Fenyltellanyl- derivát vykazoval ze zkoumaných látek nejůčinnější mezisystémový přechod. Druhý projekt se zabýval syntézou alifaticky substituovaných fluoresceinů a studiem jejich interakcí s DDQ v základním i excitovaném stavu. Získané poznatky byly využity při plánování fotochemické přípravy xanthen-9-karboxylové kyseliny. Cílem třetího projektu byla detailní revize molárních absorpčních koeficientů trans- a cis- izomerů azobenzenu v methanolu za různých podmínek. Metodou matematické minimalizace bylo ze spektroskopických dat získáno absorpční spectrum cisazobenzenu, které bude následně použito pro přesné určení kvantového výtěžku izomerizace. Čtvrtý projekt se zabýval syntézou a vlastnostmi derivátů 4-hydroxyfenacyl fenylacetátu (pHP-PA). Za účelem zkoumání fotochemických přeměn těchto derivátů byly spektroskopickými metodami určeny disociační konstnty (pKa). Pro využití pHPPA jako aktinometru byly získány kvantové výtěžky fotoreakce za různých podmínek s vysokou přesností.

Abstract:

The dissertation contains of four projects focused on the synthesis and applications of some photoactivatable compounds. In the first project, three novel compounds, phenylselanyl- and phenyltellanyl- mono substituted BODIPY derivatives, were synthesized and characterized. Comparative studies of their spectroscopic properties with iodine and chlorine-atom containing BODIPY analogues as well as their parent compound were accomplished using fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopies. Their fluorescence efficiencies were found to decrease whereas the efficiencies of the intersystem crossing (ΦISC) to increase in the order of the H→Cl→Se/I→Te substitution as the consequence of the internal heavy-atom effect of the substituents. The 3-phenyltellanyl derivative was found to exhibit the most efficient intersystem crossing with ΦISC of 59%. In the second project, three aliphatic substituted fluorescein analogues (succinyl-, methylsuccinyl-, and methyl-fluorescein) were synthesized and studied for their interactions with DDQ in the ground and excited states in non−aqueous solutions. These research results served for designing the photochemical synthesis of xanthene-9- carboxylic acid. In the third project, the molar absorption coefficients of the trans- and cis-azobenzene isomers in a methanol solution were re-determined under specific experimental conditions. Minimization procedures of the spectroscopic data were used to determine the absorption spectrum of cis-azobenzene. This spectrum was found to differ substantially from those reported in the literature, and will serve for the precise determination of the isomerization quantum yield. In the fourth project, the synthesis of various 4-hydroxyphenacyl phenylacetate (pHPPA) derivatives was successfully achieved in good overall chemical yields. Their acidity constants (pKas) were spectroscopically determined in order to evaluate their photochemical behavior. The quantum yields of disappearance of pHP-PA at various conditions were obtained to establish this compound as a new actinometer.
