Income and wealth inequalities in India

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá příjmovými a majetkovými nerovnostmi se zaměřením na Indii. Hlavním cílem je zjistit, zda příjmové nerovnosti mají tendenci v období rychlého růstu indické ekonomiky (po roce 2000) klesat, tj. zda rychlá růstová dynamika přispívá ke snižování národního Giniho koeficientu. Diplomová práce se skládá ze tří hlavních kapitol. První kapitola vymezuje nerovnosti obecně včetně definic a pojmů pojících se s tématem, dále představuje metody měření nerovností, příčiny a následky příjmových nerovností. Druhá kapitola předkládá historický vývoj příjmových nerovností v jednotlivých světových regionech, dále příjmové a majetkové nerovnosti v současnosti ve světových regionech a v Indii. Třetí kapitola se zabývá konkrétními příčinami a důsledky příjmových nerovností v Indii, porovnává situaci nerovností ve vybraných svazových státech Maharashtře a Biharu, nakonec zhodnocuje opatření vlády ke snížení nerovností.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with income and wealth inequalities with a special focus on India. The main goal is to find out whether income inequalities tend to decline during the period of rapid growth of the Indian economy (since 2000), which means whether rapid growth dynamics contributes to the reduction of the national Gini coefficient.The master thesis consists of three main chapters. The first chapter defines inequalities in general including definitions and terms related to the topic, it furthermore presents methods for measuring inequalities, causes and consequences of income inequality. The second chapter summarizes the historical development of income inequalities in the world regions, as well as current income and wealth inequalities in the world regions and in India. The third chapter deals with the specific causes and consequences of income inequality in India, compares the situation of inequality in selected states of Maharashtra and Bihar, and finally evaluates government measures to reduce inequality.
