Gentrification - the self-evident solution of suburban sprawl?

Abstract:

Práce představuje kritické argumenty vůči sídelní kaši a ukazuje, jakým způsobem legitimizují gentrifikační rétoriku Nového urbanismu a Richarda Floridy, jako samozřejmé řešení krize suburbanizace. Následně se zaměřuje na kritické zhodnocení gentrifikace a interpretuje ji jako pokračování sociálně desintegračního projektu sídelní kaše jinými prostředky. První kapitola objasňuje historické podmínky vzniku městského prostředí formou sídelní kaše a představuje jeho funkční uspořádání. Dále představuje kritické argumenty, které sídelní kaši delegitimizovali a otevírají dveře alternativním modelům růstu města jako je gentrifikace. V následující kapitole představuje dva gentrifikační proudy: Teorii kreativní třídy a Tradiční čtvrtě, které vznikají uvnitř kritické diskuse o legitimitě sídelní kaše, které v řadě svých čtenářů budí veliký optimismus. Ve třetí kapitole je popsaná méně optimistická interpretace gentrifikace, jelikož ji pojímá na jedné straně jako strategii producentů gentrifikovaného bydlení k efektivnímu zhodnocení investic. A na druhé straně ji představuje jako strategii akumulace kulturního kapitálu skrze spotřebu historicky a architektonicky vzácných nemovitostí. Na závěr práce ukazuje autor vztah mezi produkcí gentrifikovaného bydlení a vzestupem nových Outcast ghett.

Abstract:

The thesis introduces critical argumentation against urban sprawl and shows how this argumentation provided legitimization for gentrification discourses of Richard Florida and The New urbanism movement. Then it provides critical evaluation of gentrification and interprets it as the same disintegration project as urban sprawl, just using a different means to reach social polarization results. The first chapter introduces readers into historical conditions which enable rise of urban sprawl and describes its functional organization. Then it shows critical argumentations which delegitimize urban sprawl and opened doors for alternative models of city growth. The second chapter present two pro-gentrification theoretical streams: Creative class theory and Traditional neighborhood, which were formed in context of an urban sprawl discussion. Both theories are widely accepted and raise great optimism about future urban growth. The third chapter provides critical interpretations of gentrification and describes it on the one hand as a developer’s interest-oriented strategy for great appreciation of investment and on the other hand as a cultural capital accumulation strategy in the field of urban consumption of gentrified historical buildings by new urban professional classes. At the very end the author put a link between production of gentrified housing and rising of new Outcast ghettos.
