Optimistic Attitude to Life as a Cognitive Style

Abstract:

V práci se v teoretické části zaměřuji na vymezení kognitivních stylů, se zvláštním důrazem na tzv. heuristickou/algoritmickou orientaci, dále na vědecké pojetí optimismu, kde popisuji koncept tzv. dispozičního optimismu a optimistického vysvětlovacího stylu. Poukazuji také na propojenost optimismu/pesimismu, kognitivního stylu a způsobu zvládání náročných životních situací. Zabývám se i dalšími aspekty optimismu a pesimismu. Součástí práce je i stručné vymezení cirkadiánních rytmů a tzv. diurnální preference. V empirické části práce jsem se zaměřil na zjištění úrovně optimismu/pesimismu, kognitivního stylu heuristická/algoritmická orientace a diurnální preference u vybraného výzkumného souboru, kterým byla skupina 119 vysokoškolských studentů. Na základě provedeného výzkumu bylo zjištěno, že dva testy používané k určení míry optimismu (LOT-R a AASQ) v našich podmínkách nekorelují, tzn. že neměří stejné charakteristiky. Dále se podařilo zjistit, že existuje rozdíl mezi optimisty a pesimisty (respondenti rozdělení do skupin na základě dispozičního optimismu, podle výsledků testu LOT-R) v kognitivním stylu heuristická/algoritmická orientace; konkrétně že optimisté používají více heuristik při řešení různých náročných situací, kdežto pesimisté mají spíše tendenci používat algoritmů. Při rozdělení respondentů na optimisty a pesimisty na základě atribucí příčin nepříznivých událostí (podle výsledků testu AASQ) nebyl zjištěn rozdíl v kognitivním stylu. Rovněž v otázce vztahu kognitivního stylu a diurnální preference se nepodařilo zjistit, že by mezi nimi existoval statisticky významný vztah.

Abstract:

In this diploma thesis I deal with definition of cognitive styles, with accent to heuristic/algorithmic orientation, followed by scientific concept of optimism, where I describe dispositional optimism and optimistic explanatory style. I draw attention to connection of optimism/pessimism, cognitive style and the way people cope with stressful situations. I also discuss other aspects of optimism and pessimism. Within my diploma thesis I also talk about circadian rhythms and so called diurnal preference. In the empirical part I measured the level of optimism/pessimism, heuristic versus algorithmic orientation as a cognitive style and diurnal preference in group of 119 university students. Based on the results of my research I conclude that the two scales used for measuring the level of optimism (LOT-R and AASQ) do not correlate in our conditions what means that they do not measure the same characteristics. The difference between optimists and pessimists (groups selected by the result of LOT-R scale) also proved statistically significant. Results show that optimistic people use heuristic style of solving problems rather than algorithmic. On the contrary pessimistic people tend to use rather algorithmic style. Comparison of the group of optimists and pessimist by the results of AASQ scale showed no significant difference. Same was found for the relation between cognitive style and diurnal preference.
