Melatonin and its effects in mammals

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je shrnout s použitím dostupné literatury starší i nové poznatky o hormonu melatoninu v organismu savců. Formou přehledového článku je popsána struktura a syntéza melatoninu a to jak v CNS, tak i v ostaních orgánech, molekulární mechanismy působení, melatoninové receptory i jejich distribuce v organismu. Melatonin je pro organismus nezbytný pro synchronizaci cirkadiánních rytmů, ale i ke správnému fungování mnoha dalších procesů. K jeho působení dochází téměř v celém organismu a to nejen savců, ale i bezobratlých živočichů nebo rostlin. Nedostatečná syntéza hormonu melatoninu či poruchy melatoninové signalizace mohou vést k závažným poruchám a naopak, melatonin jako takový má široké využití v terapii různých onemocnění.

Abstract:

The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to summarize well-known and also new information about hormone melatonin in organism of mammals with the support of available literature. In the form of an overview article we decribed the structure and synthesis of melatonin not only in CNS but also in other organs, molecular mechanisms of functioning, melatonin receptors and their distributions in organs. Melatonin is crucial for synchranization of circadian rhythms and correct function of many other processes. Melatonin has an effect in almost whole organism of mammals, invertebrates and plants. Insufficient synthesis or signalisation of melatonin can lead to serious malfunctions. Melatonin has also wide usage in the therapy of various illnesses.
