Psychological consequences of the use of ayahuasca

Abstract:

Ayahuasca je psychoaktivní nápoj připravovaný ze směsi amazonských rostlin, nejčastěji Branisteriopsis caapi a Psychotria viridis. Tradičně se užívá v Amazonii k léčení, věštění a čarování, dnes si však získává své místo i v západním světě jako prostředek terapie různých duševních poruch a nástroj osobnostního rozvoje. Tato práce se zabývá zkoumáním psychologických důsledků užívání ayahuascy a hledá faktory na straně uživatele, které přispívají k úspěšné integraci ayahuascových zážitků do života jednotlivce. Výzkumný soubor tvoří tři uživatelé ayahuascy, kteří za sebou mají minimálně pět ayahuascových ceremonií, jež se uskutečnily v České republice v nenáboženském kontextu. V lednu a únoru 2019 s nimi byly pořízeny polostrukturované rozhovory, které byly následně analyzovány pomocí metody zakotvené teorie. Ve shodě s obdobnými výzkumy byly zjištěny pozitivní účinky ayahuascy v psychické i sociální rovině. Mezi nejvýznamnější z nich patří prohloubení pocitu vnitřního klidu, vyrovnanost, důvěra ve vlastní intuici, pochopení širších souvislostí týkajících se vlastní osobní historie i společnosti, změna hodnot a postojů směrem k uvědomělejšímu způsobu života a přístupu k sobě samému a pocit propojenosti s okolním světem. Jako faktor umožňující trvalou integraci těchto účinků do běžného života byla identifikována meditace, respektive mindfulness. Tento předpoklad je však nutno dále prozkoumat a ověřit na rozsáhlejším vzorku populace uživatelů ayahuascy v České republice.

Abstract:

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive brew usually prepared as a mixture of Amazonian plants, most commonly Branisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis. It´s been traditionally used in the Amazon for healing, divination and sorcery, however to the present day it has been growing in popularity in the western world as a remedy for treating various mental disorders and as a tool for personal growth. The present thesis aims to investigate the psychological consequences of the use of ayahuasca and seeks user-related factors that potentially contribute to successful integration of ayahuasca experience into a daily life of an individual. The sample constitutes of three ayahuasca users that have used ayahuasca at least five times in the Czech Republic in a non-religious context. Over the course of January and February 2019 semi-structured interviews were conducted with the users. The collected data were then analysed using the Grounded Theory Method. The results were consistent with similar studies. Positive effects of ayahuasca use were found on both psychological and social level. Among the most prominent are deepened sensation of inner piece, serenity, trust in one´s own intuition, understanding of broader context of personal history and the society, change in values and attitudes towards more conscious way of life and conscious approach towards oneself, and felling connected with the world that surrounds us. Meditation, or mindfulness, was identified as a factor that enables integration of ayahuasca experience into daily life. This assumption however must be further examined and verified on a larger sample of ayahuasca users in the Czech Republic.
