Tato práce zkoumá způsob, jakým puritánští osadníci Nové Anglie vnímali původní obyvatele Ameriky a jak je vyobrazili v tzv. “captivity narratives” popisujících zajetí Mary Rowlandsonové a Johna Gylese. Jejich postoje jsou prozkoumány několika různými způsoby a následně porovnány s cílem zdůraznit odlišnosti založené převážně na jejich stylu psaní a příslušnosti k různému pohlaví. Abstract:
The thesis explores the way in which New England Puritans perceived Native Americans and portrayed them in two captivity narratives written by Mary Rowlandson and John Gyles. Their attitudes are examined on several different levels and compared with each other to emphasize their differences based predominantely on their writing style and gender.
