The Impact of the COVID-19 on the US Stock Market

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na zjištění dopadu COVID-19 na americký akciový trh a jeho sektory na základě analýzy vývoje amerického akciového indexu S&P 500 v roce 2020. V úvodní kapitole je vysvětlena metodika a cíl práce. V druhé kapitole jsou vysvětleny teoretické aspekty akciového trhu. Třetí kapitolu tvoří charakteristika amerického akciového trhu včetně popisu jeho významných propadů. K porozumění chování akciového trhu během pandemie v předchozích letech byly popsány dvě historické pandemie, které tvoří čtvrtou kapitolu. Pátá kapitola se zaměřuje na charakteristiku akciového trhu před pandemií COVID-19 a teoretický odhad jejího dopadu na jednotlivé sektory. Šestá kapitola tvoří popis dopadu pandemie COVID-19 na americkou ekonomii pomocí makroekonomických ukazatelů. Vývoj amerického akciového indexu S&P 500 během pandemie byl v sedmé kapitole analyzován. V osmé kapitole byly analyzovány jeho sektory. Následně byl formulován závěr o skutečném dopadu pandemie COVID-19 na americký akciový trh a jeho segmenty.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on determining the impact of COVID-19 on the US stock market and its sectors based on an analysis of the performance of the US stock index S&P 500 in 2020. In the introductory chapter, the methodology and goal of the work were explained. The second chapter explains the theoretical aspects of the stock market. The third chapter contains description of the US stock market, including a description of its significant crashes. To understand the behavior of the stock market during the pandemic in previous years, two historical pandemics have been described, which form the fourth chapter. The fifth chapter focuses on the characteristics of the stock market before the COVID-19 pandemic and a theoretical estimate of its impact on individual sectors. The sixth chapter describes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the US economy using macroeconomic indicators. The performance of the US stock index S&P 500 during the pandemic was analyzed in Chapter 7. In the eighth chapter, its sectors were analyzed. Subsequently, a conclusion was drawn about the real impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the US stock market and its sectors.
