Development of Czech Republic's GDP before and after Entering the EU

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na popis a zhodnocení růstu HDP a dalších makroekonomických ukazatelů českého hospodářství v letech 1993 – 2008 a pokus o predikci jejich dalšího možného vývoje v budoucnu. První kapitola se zabývá objasněním základních pojmů a to především HDP, ekonomického růstu a moderní teorie růstu, která vysvětluje, co je a co není podstatné pro zajištění dlouhodobého ekonomického růstu. V další kapitole jsou popsány metody výpočtu HDP. Vlastní jádro práce tvoří přehled a analýza vývoje HDP a dalších ukazatelů. Tyto kapitoly jsou chronologicky rozděleny na období před vstupem a po vstupu České republiky do Evropské unie. V poslední kapitole se práce zabývá predikcí budoucího vývoje HDP. Primárním cílem této práce není zjištění, co se mělo v minulosti udělat jinak, abychom zabránili dlouhé stagnaci, kterou ekonomika vykazovala, ale sestavení logického, uceleného přehledu o vývoji ekonomiky a to především růstu HDP po transformačním přechodu z centrálně plánovaného hospodářství na tržní ekonomiku. Základním východiskem práce je studium podkladů z teoreticky i empiricky orientované literatury (ať již ekonomické, nebo statistické či politologické) zaměřené na hospodářský růst, konečným cílem je pak vyvození závěrů ohledně determinant míry ekonomické úspěšnosti země v čase. Vzhledem k obecně známým faktům (jako např. neshody mezi vedením ČNB a bývalým premiérem Václavem Klausem ohledně ovlivňování vývoje makroekonomických veličin byl důraz kladen i na analýzu vlivu makroekonomických veličin a makroekonomické politiky na dlouhodobý růst.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the description and assessment of the growth of the GDP (gross domestic product) and macroeconomic indicators of the Czech economy between the years 1993-2008. It is also an attempt to predict the possible development in the future. The first chapter deals with the clarification of the basic terms- mainly GDP, economic growth and modern theory of growth that explains the important and unimportant factors for provision of the long term economic growth. In the next chapter the advantages of calculation of the GDP are described. The main work consists of the outline and analysis of the development of the GDP and other indicators. Those chapters are chronologically divided into the period before and after entrance of the Czech Republic into the European Union. In the last chapter the thesis concerns the prediction of future progression of the GDP. The primary goal of this work is not to find out what should have been done in a different way in the past in order to avoid the long stagnation which the economy had been showing. It tries to create a logical and compact outline of the development of the Czech economy, especially the growth of the GDP after the transformation from central economic planning to the free market economy. The thesis is based on a research of sources focused on the growth of the economy. These sources contain both theoretical as well as practical literature (economical, statistical, political sciences). The ultimate goal is to conclude about the determinants of the rate of country's success. Regarding all the well known facts (such as for example the disagreement between the governing body of the Czech National Bank and the former Prime Minister Václav Klaus about the influence on the development of macroeconomic quantities), the emphasis was also put on the analysis of the impact of macroeconomic quantities and macroeconomic policies on the long term growth.
