Childhood in History and Prehistory

Abstract:

The various child-related artefacts often found in archaeological records inform us about the changing character of childhood in the course of human history as well as about the children’s life and their importance to society. The problem is that a lot of them are unidentifiable or hard to recognize because of the lack of an approach that would establish their exact interpretation. One of the most significant pieces of evidence for the idea that children were more than merely passive members of community is children's fingerprints left on the ceramic objects. The practical part of this thesis is focused on the measurements of the breadth of epidermal ridges imprinted on experimental ceramics made by contemporary children. Five thousand measurements on 1838 fingerprints of 191 sub-adult individuals were made and the results confirmed that the mean epidermal ridge breadth can be used to estimate the age of children during their growth period. The average values that resulted from measuring of more fingerprints represented the individual better and provided more accurate estimation of age than those gained from only one measurement. The correlation between breadth of epidermal ridges and the height and weight of their creators was studied as well. Results showed that, during their growth period, epidermal ridge breadth of children correlated with height more than with weight.

Abstract:

V archeologických nálezoch sú často objavované rôzne artefakty spájané s deťmi žijúcimi v minulých populáciách, ktoré vypovedajú nielen o zmene charakteru a fázach detstva v rôznych obdobiach histórie a prehistórie, ale aj o ich živote, správaní a význame pre spoločnosť. Problémom je, že mnohé z nich sú neidentifikovateľné alebo ťažko rozpoznateľné, pretože chýba postup, ktorý by zaručil ich spoľahlivú interpretáciu. Jedným z najdôležitejších dokladov o tom, že deti v minulosti neboli iba pasívnymi členmi komunity, sú detské odtlačky prstov zanechané na keramických predmetoch. Praktická časť tejto práce je zameraná na meranie šírky epidermálnych líšt, ktoré boli zachytené na experimentálnej keramike vyrábanej súčasnými deťmi. Na 1838 odtlačkoch papilárneho terénu ruky 191 nedospelých jedincov bolo uskutočnených 5000 meraní, ktoré potvrdili, že šírku epidermálnych líšt možno použiť na odhad veku detí v priebehu rastu. Priemerné hodnoty získané zmeraním viacerých odtlačkov reprezentujú jedinca lepšie a poskytujú presnejšie odhady veku ako hodnoty získané len jedným meraním. Študovaná bola aj závislosť šírky líšt od výšky postavy a telesnej hmotnosti. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že výška jedinca v priebehu rastu koreluje so šírkou epidermálnych líšt viac ako hmotnosť.
