Leonard Cohen's New Skin for the Old Ceremony

Abstract:

The attempt to interpret the lyrics of Leonard Cohen might sound rather boldly, and the same is valid for the endeavour to clarify the concepts of love and marriage. The basic idea behind what the poet had written and later sang on his album New Skin for the Old Ceremony, is the tender profile of harmony, its inescapable disappearance and final re-emergence. The aim of this thesis is to show possible ways how to approach his work and analyze it objectively while a reader is left to form his own conclusions, thus contributing to the overall interpretation. To this purpose, the thesis provides necessary biography and basics of some Jewish traditions, especially of the Sabbath ritual in connection with Kabbalah, Jung?s psychology, mythology and religion. The outcome of this study is a closer understanding of the lyrics and Cohen?s work, which paves the way for further research in this field.

Snaha interpretovat dílo Leonarda Cohena může být považována za troufalost. Stejně tak jako snaha objasnit koncept lásky a manželství. To, co básník napsal a posléze jako zpěvák nazpíval na albu New Skin for the Old Ceremony, je nastíněním samého počátku harmonie, jejího nevyhnutelného konce a opětovného dosažení. Cílem této práce je ukázat problematiku kritiky a přístupu k jeho dílu. Analyzovat jej objektivně a zároveň nechat čtenáře, aby sám přispíval svými postřehy. K tomuto účelu studie poskytuje potřebnou biografii a přehled některých židovských tradic, obzvláště šábesu ve spojení s kabalou, Jungovým psychologickým přístupem a neméně mytologie a náboženství. Výsledkem je bližší pohled do problematiky písní a nástin možné cesty pro další studie tohoto kanadského básníka.??????? ??
