Hope, gratitude, and self-compassion in relation to perceived stress among patients with multiple myeloma

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na pacienty s onkologickým onemocněním zvaným mnohočetný myelom a míru, do jaké pociťují naději, vděčnost, sebesoucit a stres. Tyto konstrukty byly operacionalizovány pomocí sebeposuzovacích dotazníků. Výzkum proběhl na podzim roku 2020 a byl přístupný pouze v online formě. Výzkumný soubor se skládal ze 74 pacientů, z čehož 55,4 % byly ženy a 44,6 % představovali muži. Vztahy mezi proměnnými byly zjišťovány pomocí Pearsonova korelačního koeficientu, přičemž byly zjištěny signifikantní vztahy mezi nadějí a ostatními třemi proměnnými, a dále mezi sebesoucitem a stresem. Oproti tomu vděčnost nekorelovala ani se sebesoucitem, ani se stresem, ale pouze s nadějí. Kromě korelační analýzy byla využita i regresní analýza a hlavním přínosem této práce je zjištění, že naděje a sebesoucit jsou nezávislými prediktory prožívaného stresu. U souboru pacientů s mnohočetným myelomem společně vysvětlovaly 45 % variability v prožívaném stresu.

Abstract:

The subject of this paper are patients with an oncological disease called multiple myeloma and the level to which they experience hope, gratitude, self-compassion and stress. These constructs were operationalized using self-assessment questionnaires. The research was held in autumn 2020 and only in online form. The research sample consisted of 74 patients, of which 55,4 % were women and 44,6 % were men. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to measure relationships between the variables. There were found significant relationships between hope and other three variables, and between self-compassion and stress. In contrast, gratitude did not correlate with self-compassion nor stress but only with hope. In addition to correlation analysis there was also used regression analysis and the main benefit of this paper is finding out that hope and self-compassion are independent predictors of perceived stress. Together, they explained 45 % of the variability in perceived stress in the sample of patients with multiple myeloma.
