Restoration of the Tohoku region

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the reconstruction of the Tōhoku area after the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. It specifically focuses on its three prefectures - Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, whose coastline was the most devastated that day. It puts the revitalization of their communities under the context of the severe demographic crisis that these parts of Japan are suffering from, discussed in the first chapter. In the next section, this thesis looks at the overall picture of the reconstruction, the conditions in which the survivors lived for many years, its impact on social capital, as well as the building of new infrastructure and the problems associated with it. The third chapter takes a closer look at cities and their particular approach to post-disaster tourism, which has become an interesting part of reconstruction because it is often purely in the hands of local residents. It concludes by attempting to assess the overall state of revitalization, its success or failure.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa venuje obnove oblasti Tóhoku po zemetrasení a cunami 11.marca 2011. Konkrétne sa zameriava na jej tri prefektúry – Iwate, Mijagi a Fukušimu, ktorých pobrežie bolo toho dňa najviac zdevastované. Revitalizáciu ich komunít dáva do súvislosti s vážnou demografickou krízou, ktorou tieto časti Japonska trpia, rozoberanou v prvej kapitole. V ďalšej časti sa táto práca pozerá na celkový obraz obnovy, podmienky v ktorých pre-živší dlhé roky žili, ich vplyv na sociálny kapitál ako aj budovanie novej infraštruktúry a problémy s ňou spojené. Tretia kapitola sa bližšie pozerá na mestá a ich osobitý prístup k post-katastrofálnemu turizmu, ktorý sa stal zaujímavou súčasťou obnovy, pretože je často čisto v rukách miestnych obyvateľov. V závere sa tak snaží zhodnotiť celkový stav revitalizácie, jej úspešný alebo neúspešný priebeh.
