Regeneration of city centres and inner cities in the context of shrinking cities

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je přispět k pochopení regenerace městských center a vnitřních měst v kontextu shrinking cities. Práce shrnuje dosavadní poznání v oblasti urbánní regenerace a city shrinkage a objasňuje, proč je regenerace v tomto kontextu problematičtější než v případě jejich růstových konkurentů. Práce se rovněž snaží objasnit, jaké jsou dopady procesu shrinkage na vnitřní části měst. Dále se snaží odpovědět na to, proč regenerace městských center a vnitřních měst v tomto kontextu nabývají takových podob, jaké mají a nakonec také na to, jaké jsou skutečné přínosy a dopady regenerace. Výsledky práce ukazují, že přínosy regenerace jsou povětšinou v důsledku kontextu značně limitované, přičemž jsou doprovázeny řadou doprovodných negativních dopadů, což je způsobeno nepříliš vhodně formovanými projekty, které se soustřeďují zejména na regeneraci fyzickou a ekonomickou, přičemž zejména regenerace sociální zůstává opomíjena. Rovněž bylo prokázáno, že je opomíjena regenerace ve smyslu urbánní formy a to nejen ve vnitřních částech měst.

Abstract:

The main goal of this work is to contribute to the understanding of the regeneration of urban centres and inner cities in the context of shrinking cities. The work summarizes the existing knowledge in the field of urban regeneration and city shrinkage and clarifies why regeneration in this context is more problematic than in the case of their growth competitors. The work also tries to clarify the effects of the shrinkage process on the inner parts of cities. It also seeks to answer why the regeneration of urban centres and inner cities in this context takes the forms they have and, ultimately, it attempts to answer what the real benefits and impacts of regeneration are. The results show that the benefits of regeneration are mostly limited due to the context, and are accompanied by a number of co-existing negative effects, which is caused by not very well-designed projects that focus mainly on physical and economic regeneration, while social regeneration remains neglected. It has also been shown that regeneration in the sense of urban form is neglected, not only in the inner parts of cities.
