Analysis of master therapists’ characteristics

Abstract:

Research of therapist‘s effect suggest that characteristics of therapist contribute to outcome of therapy. Studies on experts in therapy enrich knowledge which characteristics are effective in therapeutic practice. In this study we focus on characteristics of those therapists who are considered to be expert in the field of psychotherapy. Some characteristics of master therapists were found to be culturally specific in former studies (Jennings et al., 2008). Aim of this study is to validate findings of former studies and identify eventual characteristics bound to historical or cultural context of Czech psychotherapy. We used peer nomination to identify master therapists in Czech Republic. Semi-structured interviews were used to examine characteristics of nine identified master therapists. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis combined with consensual qualitative analysis. We found 16 themes organized in 6 domains: (a) Humble attitude towards mastery, clients, and colleagues, (b) Relationship, (c) Awareness of one’s needs, limits, and resources, (d) Continuous development, (e) Engagement, and (f) Awareness of the complexity of therapeutic work. The results are discussed in the context of findings of previous studies, therapist’s effect, therapist’s professional development and cultural differences.

Abstract:

Výskum efektu terapeuta poukazuje na skutočnosť, že vlastnosti terapeuta prispievajú k výsledkom terapie. Skúmanie expertov prispieva k zisteniam, ktoré vlastnosti terapeutov sú efektívne v terapeutickej praxi. V našej štúdii sa zameriavame na vlastnosti popredných terapeutov, ktorí sú považovaní za majstrov vo svojom odbore. V predošlých štúdiách majstrovských terapeutov sa zistilo, že niektoré vlastnosti sa javia ako kultúrne špecifické (Jennings et al., 2008). Cieľom tejto štúdie je overiť platnosť už zistených vlastností majstrovských terapeutov a zistiť prípadné špecifické vlastnosti v kultúrno-historickom kontexte českej psychoterapie. Na identifikáciu majstrovských terapeutov sme využili metódu nominácie terapeutov v rámci odbornej komunity. Vlastnosti deviatich identifikovaných majstrovských terapeutov boli zisťované pomocou pološtruktúrovaných rozhovorov. Prepisy rozhovorov boli analyzované tematickou analýzou obohatenou o prvky konsenzuálnej kvalitatívnej analýzy. Zistili sme 16 tém v rámci 6 domén: a) Pokorný postoj voči majstrovstvu, klientom a kolegom, b) Vzťah, c)Vedomie vlastných potrieb, zdrojov a obmedzení, d) Kontinuálny sebarozvoj, e) Angažovanosť a f) Vedomie komplexnosti terapeutickej práce. Výsledky sú diskutované v kontexte zistení predošlých štúdií, zistení o efektívnych prvkoch na strane terapeuta, profesionálneho rozvoja terapeuta a českého kultúrno-historického kontextu.
