Modality in Courtroom Discourse: Analysis of Types of Questioning in the Shipman Trial

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá typy kladení otázek užívaných během křížového výslechu v kauze dr. Shipman. Z pragmatického hlediska zkoumá přesvědčovací prostředky, které jsou vlastní každé kategorii. Důležitými přesvědčovacími aspekty jsou elicitativní síla a konducivnost. Práce zkoumá rozdíl v interpretaci těchto prostředků při užití v běžné konverzaci a specifické situaci soudního líčení. Nejvýznamnější kategorií jsou otázky přívěsné (tag questions), které jsou nejčastější a vykazují největší variantnost významů. Práce se dále zabývá dalšími typy otázek jako jsou otázky typu wh-questions, otázky typu yes-no questions, deklarativní otázky, otázky s lexikálními markery a alternativní otázky.

Abstract:

The M.A. major thesis deals with types of questioning used during the cross-examination in the Shipman trial. From the point of view of pragmatics it studies the persuasion devices inherent in each category. Among the features that affect the persuasive illocutionary force are elicitative force and conduciveness. The differences in force with regard to general context of conversation and the specific institutional context of the courtroom are studied. Tag questions are discussed extensively as they are the most frequent category and they demonstrate the greatest variety of meanings. Other forms of questions, such as wh-questions, yes-no questions, declarative questions, questions with lexical tags and alternative questions are discussed.
