Abstract:

Tato dizertace se zabývá dynamikou etnicity v desegregované školní třídě. Jejím cílem bylo porozumět tomu, v jakých podobách, kontextech a situacích je etnicita zvýznamňována v životě školy a v každodennosti školní třídy a jaký vliv to má na fungování třídního kolektivu. Protože se etnicita kříží s jinými identitami žáků, soustředil se výzkum také na způsoby, kterými se toto protínání odehrává a strukturuje jak pozice etnicky minoritních dívek a chlapců, tak mezietnické vztahy. (Ne)přítomnost etnicity byla nejprve sledována na úrovni vzdělávacího systému města a institucionálního světa školy a potom v rovině přestávkového a výukového interakčního řádu dvou etnicky smíšených tříd s integrovanými romskými žáky. Specificky se výzkum zaměřil na způsoby, kterými dochází k performování etnizovaných identit skrze interakční rituály. Rituály byly konceptualizovány pomocí prací E. Goffmana, R. Collinse a studií zaměřených na roli rituálů ve školní kultuře (P. McLaren). Důraz na interakcionistickou analýzu ritualizovaných symbolických představení je kompatibilní s pojetím etnicity coby situačně ustavované a proměnlivé kategorie, které je teoreticky syceno kritikou analytického groupismu (R. Brubaker). Etnografická studie byla založena na pozorování výuky a přestávek a rozhovorech s vyučujícími a žáky dvou tříd osmého ročníku na základní škole ve městě, které prošlo procesem desegregace. V analýze etnicitu zasazuji do proměnlivé sítě performancí, které produkují hranice příslušností i marginalizací. Jako situační znak byla etnicita spíše ojediněle explicitně obnažována (např. skrze etnicky či rasově zabarvené přezdívky), zatímco většinou byla subtilně vpisována do jiných identit. Ukázala jsem, že se etnicita křížila jak se situačními identitami chlapců z etnických menšin (např. subkulturními v rámci „Roma free style“ interakčního řádu), tak zejména s jejich genderem. Propadnutí romští chlapci totiž kompenzovali velmi slabou žákovskou pozici intenzivnější prací na maskulinitě skrze interakční rituály, v nichž nacházeli alternativní zdroje respektu. Zatímco jejich rituály oscilovaly mezi inkluzí a exkluzí, v kolektivu druhé třídy přispívaly k obnovování solidarity napříč třídním společenstvím. Rozdílný průběh stejných ritualizovaných forem (rap, rvačka) ukazoval na plasticitu etnicity, která za jistých podmínek může zvýrazňovat sociální dělení, zatímco v konstelacích jiných ztrácí na své symbolické síle. Na rozdíl od chlapců z etnických menšin, jejichž pozice ve vrstevnické struktuře obou tříd byla silná, byly romské dívky více ohroženy exkluzí. Té se snažily vyvarovat zvýšenou péčí o vzhled, která je však vystavovala protichůdným tlakům – zvyšovala sice jejich symbolický kapitál v kolektivu, zároveň je vrhala v podezření z předčasné vyspělosti. Diskurz vyučujících o předčasném dospívání romských žáků měl genderované dopady, protože zatímco ohrožoval pověst romských dívek, romští chlapci z nařčení vyučujících dokázali těžit. Nejen tato etnizovaná očekávání vyučujících, ale i jejich snaha vštípit některým romským žákům práci jako jádrovou hodnotu školy posilovala dynamiku mezi rituály instrukce a rituály rezistence. Výzkum ukázal, že žáci aktivně vyjednávají své identity způsoby, které jsou mediované nejen jejich genderem, etnicitou či třídou, ale rovněž i specifickým kontextem, v němž se interakce odehrávají. Abstract:

The thesis deals with the dynamics of ethnicity in desegregated classrooms. Its aim was to understand in what forms, contexts and situations ethnicity is emphasised in school life and everyday classroom life and how this affects the functioning of a class. As ethnicity intersects with other identities which pupils have, the research also focussed on the ways in which this intersection takes place and how it structures the positions of minority girls and boys and also interethnic relationships. The presence or non-presence of ethnicity was firstly observed at the level of the educational system of a city and in the institutional world of a school and then at the level of interactions at breaks and during teaching in two ethnically mixed classes with integrated Roma pupils. Specifically, the research focussed on the ways in which ethnic identities are performed through interaction rituals. The rituals were conceptualized through the work of Erving Goffman, Randall Collins and studies focussing on their role in the school culture (Peter McLaren). The emphasis on the interactionist analysis of ritualized symbolic performances is compatible with the concept of ethnicity as situationally established and changing category that is theoretically saturated by criticism of analytical groupism (Rogers Brubaker). The ethnographic study is based on observation of teaching and breaks, as well as interviews with teachers and students from two eighth-year classes of a lower secondary school in a town which has undergone a process of desegregation. In the analysis of ethnicity I look at the changing network of performances which produce the borders of affiliations and marginalisations. Ethnicity was only rarely explicitly exposed as a situational feature (e.g. through ethnically or racially-tinged nicknames); it was mostly subtly inscribed in other identities. I showed that ethnicity intersected with the situational identities of the boys from ethnic minorities (e.g. subculturally at the level of „Roma free style”) and especially with their gender. The Roma boys compensated for their academic failure and very weak position as pupils with intensive work on masculinity through interaction rituals in which they found alternative sources of respect. While their rituals oscillated between inclusion and exclusion, in the second class they contributed to restoring solidarity across the class community. The differing course of the same ritualized forms (rap, fights) showed the plasticity of ethnicity, which under certain conditions can be accentuated by other social divisions, while in other constellations it loses its symbolic power. Unlike the boys from ethnic minorities, whose position in the peer structure of the two classes was strong, the Roma girls were more at risk of exclusion. They tried to avoid this by looking after their appearance, although this put them under conflicting pressures – it increased their attractiveness in the eyes of the boys, but at the same time resulted in accusations of premature development. The teachers’ discourse on the premature adolescence of Roma pupils had gender impacts, because while it threatened the reputation of Roma girls, some Roma boys managed to benefit from the accusations. Not does the ethnicised expectations of teachers, but also their desire to instill work as a core value of school into some Roma pupils strengthened the dynamics between the rituals of instruction and those of resistence. The research showed that pupils actively negotiate their identities in ways that are mediated not only by gender, ethnicity or class, but also by the specific context in which the interaction takes place.
