Compositional analysis of carbonates at selected profiles near the Tournaisian/Viséan boundary

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na kompoziční analýzu karbonátů na třech profilech při hraničním intervalu tournai/visé s využitím vícerozměrných statistických metod. Profil v Moravském krasu ležící ve starém lůmku blízko areálu firmy Zetor u Brna náleží hádsko-říčským vápencům líšeňského souvrství. Přítomnost vrstev tournaiského stáří předpokládaná předchozími výzkumy nebyla potvrzena a nová biostratigrafická data naznačují stáří spodní části visé. Sedimenty představují periplatformní kal rozmývaný dnovými proudy nebo distální „base-cut out“ kalciturbidity (wackestone–packstone) s polohami klasických kalciturbiditů (packstone–grainstone) vnějšího vějíře karbonátového osypu nebo pánve. Rozeznány byly alochtonní komponenty z dynamického prostředí písčitých oolitických mělčin i blízce subtidálního prostředí s porosty řas a autochtonní/paraautochtonní spikuly porifer. Bioklasty ojedinělé polohy wackestonu naznačují hlubší subtidální prostředí, ale autochtonita/alochtonita materiálu zůstává neobjasněna. Výsledky statistických analýz pro profil Three Cliffs Bay v jižním Walesu jsou v souladu s předchozími faciálními a sekvenčně stratigrafickými interpretacemi. Přechod od heterotrofního k fototrofnímu společenstvu nad hranicí tournai/visé nebyl zaznamenán. Absence ooidů v Gully Oolite (packstone–grainstone) na viséském profilu Ogmore a subtidální charakter Caswell Bay Mudstone (packstone) je v souladu s předpokladem sedimentace v hlubší části rampy ve srovnání s Three Cliffs Bay. Fototrofní organismy jsou hojné. Zelené a červené řasy jsou zastoupeny ve všech vzorcích a tvoří až 20% komponent. Kompozice karbonátů Caswell Bay Mudstone pod a nad paleosolem odrážejícím stav nízké hladiny je téměř shodná a nad paleosolem medián proti očekávání stoupá. Podobnost mikrofacií okolo hranice Caswell Bay Mudstone (wackestone)/High Tor Limestone (wakestone–packstone) mohla být způsobena postupující transgresí a přesunem sedimentace ze subtidálních podmínek nad bází bouřkového vlnění k podmínkám pod bází bouřkového vlnění.

Abstract:

The compositional analysis of carbonates using multivariate statistical methods was applied on three sections near the Tournaisian/Viséan boundary. The section in an old quarry near the Zetor factory in Brno belongs to the Hády-Říčka Limestones of the Líšeň Formation (Moravian Karst, Czech Republic). The presence of Tournaisian strata reported by previous works was not recognized and current biostratigraphic data suggest the lower part of the Viséan stage. The succession of outer carbonate apron or basinal facies probably consists of periplatform ooze reworked by bottom currents or distal base-cut out calciturbidites (wackestone–packstone) with a few classical calciturbidites (packstone–grainstone). Allochthonous components derived from high-energy sandy oolitic environment and near-subtidal environment with abundant algae as well as autochthonous or paraautochthonous spicules of porifers were recognized. The sole interbed of wackestone with numerous trilobites, brachiopods and ostracods contain bioclasts indicating deeper subtidal settings but its origin (autochthonous/allochthonous) remains unclear. Results of statistical analysis for Three Cliffs Bay section in South Wales (United Kingdom) are in accord with the previous interpretations of facies development and sequence stratigraphy. The shift from heterotrophic to phototrophic association above the Tournaisian/Viséan boundary was not documented. The absence of ooids in the Gully Oolite (packstone–grainstone) at Ogmore section which is Viséan in age and subtidal character of the Caswell Bay Mudstone (packstone) is in accord with assumed sedimentation in deeper part of the ramp in comparison with Three Cliffs Bay section. Phototrophic organisms are abundant, green and red algae are present in all samples up to 20%. Composition of the Caswell Bay Mudstone below and above the paleosol reflecting lowstand is generally the same, and median values above the paleosol are against the assumption higher. The similarity of microfacies around the Caswell Bay Mudstone (packstone)/High Tor Limestone (wackestone–packstone) boundary might reflect a shift from subtidal settings above the storm wave base to settings below the storm wave base during progressing transgression.
