Effect of the pre- and syn-depositional tectonics on the development of delta and its fan on the rifted continental margin; northern Exmouth Plateau

Abstract:

Exmouth plató je strukturní jednotka severní části carnarvonské pánve, která je součástí severozápadního pasivního okraje Austrálie. Jižní část tohoto plató bývá častým centrem zájmu, a to jak čistě badatelských, tak i ekonomicky motivovaných vyhledávacích průzkumů ložisek ropy a plynu. Z uvedeného důvodu byla již v minulosti mnoha autory sestavena detailní stratigrafie všech zájmových úseků. Oproti tomu severní část plató je obvykle pouze na okraji zájmu, a proto není tak detailně prozkoumaná. Tato práce je tak prvotním pokusem interpretovat a rekonstruovat spodnokřídovou deltu v této části a stanovit vliv před- a syndepoziční tektoniky na její vývoj. Stavba a vývoj delty byly rekonstruovány na základě interpretací 56 reflexně-seismických řezů s využitím poznatků z dosud publikované literatury o deltách. Bylo zjištěno, že (1) delta je zcela post-riftní, (2) pouze druhořadě byla stavba delty ovlivněna riftingem podél poklesových zlomů směru SV-JZ, (3) stavbu delty lze rozdělit na dvě části vytvořené během dvou depozičních událostí (první a druhá generace), (4) delta první generace začala progradovat po subsidenci, která nastala po rozpadu kontinentu, (5) obě generace delty byly dotovány z několika distribučních kanálů, (6) delta první generace byla klasifikována jako transgresivní delta vnitřního šelfu či šelfového okraje s dominantní říčním zásobováním, (7) ukládání první generace i celková sedimentace delty byly ukončeny zatopením mořem, (8) po třech až pěti milionech let zvýšené úrovně hladina mořské vody klesla a začala progradovat delta druhé generace, a to až 5x rychleji než první generace, a (9) při depozici obou generací delty severního plató dominoval říční přínos, uplatnila se i sedimentace ze vznosu a ovlivnění přílivo-odlivovými procesy.

Abstract:

The Exmouth Plateau is a structural unit of the Northern Carnarvon Basin, which is a part of the northwestern Australian passive margin. The Southern Plateau has been the subject of considerable academic and exploration interest, and multiple authors have provided detailed stratigraphic studies, due to the oil and gas potential of the region. However, the Northern Exmouth Plateau remains marginalized and poorly explored. This study is a pioneering attempt to interpret and reconstruct the Early Cretaceous Northern Exmouth Plateau delta (NEP delta), and asses the relationship between the delta deposition and tectonism of the active margin. The architecture and evolution of the delta is discussed based on a detailed interpretation of 56 prestack time-migrated reflection seismic and synthesis of known literature. The results show that (1) delta is post-rift, (2) rifting affected the delta deposition secondarily by a series of mainly NE-SW striking normal extensional faults, (3) two separate deposition events flooded the northern plateau, i.e. the first and second generation, (4) the first-generation delta initiated its progradation as a result of the post-breakup subsidence, (5) both generations were supplied by multiple distributary channels, (6) the first-generation delta is classified as supply-driven, transgressive, inner-shelf and shelf-break delta, (7) major transgression ended the first-generation progradation and established a sedimentation break, (8) after 3 to 5 million long transgressive peak, the sea-level retreated and second-generation delta prograded up to 5x faster compared to the first-generation delta, and (9) the whole Northern Exmouth Plateau delta (both generations) was buoyant-driven, tide-influenced, river-dominated system.
