Translation of puns in Asterix

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to translate puns and wordplays in Asterix comics. It is divided into two parts, the theoretical part and the practical part. We first introduce comics in general as the ninth art in the theoretical part, then we discuss the literary form and explain its most important terminology. After that we focus on the theory of comic translation. We introduce the most important general methods of translation and the specifics of comic translation along with its problems. Next we introduce Asterix comics, its meaning and characteristics. The volume Asterix le Gaulois is the subject of our analysis. We identify puns and analyze them. We compare the original version of the comic book in French with the Czech transla- tion. We evaluate the translation, determine the translation strategies of puns and propose our own translations.

Abstract:

Cette mémoire de licence aura pour objectif une traduction les jeux de mots figurant dans la bande dessinée Astérix. Elle sera divisée en deux parties, une partie théorique et une partie pratique. Dans la partie théorique, nous présenterons d'abord la bande dessinée comme un neuvi?me art en général, puis nous dirons de quelle forme littéraire elle s'agit et nous expliquerons sa terminologie la plus importante. Ensuite, nous nous concentrerons sur la théo- rie de la traduction de la bandes dessinées, en introduisant certaines des méthodes de traduc- tion les plus importantes en général et les spécificités de la traduction de las jeux de mots avec sa problématique. Apr?s, la bande dessinée Astérix sera présentée, sa signification et ses traits caractéristiques. Dans la partie pratique, le sujet de notre analyse sera l'album Astérix le Gaulois. Nous passerons ? l'identification des jeux de mots et ? leur analyse. Nous compa- rerons une version originale de la bande dessinée en français avec une traduction tch?que, que nous évaluerons, déterminerons la stratégie dans laquelle les calembours ont été traduits et proposerons notre propre solution de traduction.
