Searching for a Moral Standpoint of Oscar Wilde through his Letters and Works

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis "Searching for a Moral Standpoint of Oscar Wilde through his Letters and Works" aims to look at life and the most important works of Oscar Wilde. One of the aims is to analyze his letters and works to look for signs of his moral standpoint, which is something that was often questioned and judged during his life in the Victorian era. Mainly it focuses on works that were considered the most controversial or important: The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband and De Profundis and how Oscar Wilde's style as a member of the Aesthetic movement influenced those works and the critics of the Victorian era. Furthermore, this work will show signs of how his work related to his personal life and the main reasons he decided to dedicate most of his works to unfolding about the hypocrisy of Victorian society.

Abstract:

Cílem Bakalářské práce "Hledání Morálky Oscara Wilde v jeho Dopisech a Dílech" je ohlédnout se zpět na nejdůležitější dopisy a díla Oscara Wilde. Jedním z cílů je analyzovat jeho dopisy a díla a najít v nich stopy po jeho morálce, která byla během jeho života ve Viktoriánském období často souzena a zpochybňována. Hlavní důraz klade na díla, která byla považována za nejkontroverznější a nejdůležitější: The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband a De Profundis a také na to, jak styl Oscara Wilde, jakožto člena Estetického hnutí ovlivnil jeho díla a kritiky Viktoriánského období. Dále tato práce ukáže náznaky toho, jak se jeho práce prolínala s jeho osobním životem a také hlavní důvody toho, proč se rozhodl svá díla zasvětit odhalování pokrytectví Viktoriánské společnosti.
