American Teen TV: Identification and Interpretation of Teen Girl Archetypes of the 21st Century

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce se snaží rozeznat základní archetypy dívčích postav v amerických seriálech pro teenagery z 21. století a porovnat jejich různé představitele. Soustředí se na stereotypní ztvářnění náctiletých dívek a argumentuje, že současné televizní serialy popírají tradice príběhů o teenagerech z předešlých let, a tím pozitivně působí na jejich diváky. Diplomová práce se také pokusí zjistit, zda a jak tato ztvárnění ovlivňují americkou společnost a obecně diskusi o náctiletých dívkách v americké populární kultuře.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis aims to identify basic teen girl character archetypes in American teen TV series from the 21st century and to compare their various representatives. It focuses on stereotypical portrayals of teenage girls and argues that contemporary television challenges previously set traditions of teenage narratives, and thereby positively affects its audience. The thesis also attempts to determine whether and how these depictions influence American society and the discourse about teenage girls in American popular culture.
