Analysis of the impact of low interest rates on bank business

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce má za cíl mapování dopadů období nízkých úrokových sazeb na hospodaření bank. V první části jsou popsány teoretické základy a mechanismy měnové politiky, je probrán koncept cílování inflace a možnosti ovlivňování ekonomiky v období nízkých úrokových sazeb. Rozebraná je také politika České národní banky v letech 2010 až 2020. V další části je uveden vývoj základních makroekonomických ukazatelů, které sleduje ČNB při rozhodování o měnové politice. Následně je popsán vývoj bilance bankovního sektoru za účelem zjištění celotržních trendových změn v rámci bankovního trhu a zjištění dopadů měnové politiky ČNB na bankovní sektor. Současně byla provedena analýza výnosů a nákladů bankovního trhu a odvozen vliv nízkých úrokových sazeb na ziskovost bankovního sektoru. V další části bylo provedeno srovnání rozvah, výnosů a nákladů vybraných bank. Na základě provedené analýzy byly popsány změny v hospodaření jednotlivých bank a zjištěny dopady nízkých úrokových sazeb na jednotlivé banky.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to map the impact of the period of low interest rates on the banks business. In the first part the theoretical foundations and mechanisms of monetary policy are described, followed by the concept of inflation targeting and the ways of influencing the economy during a period of low interest rates. Based on this basis the monetary policy of the Czech National Bank between 2010 and 2020 is shown in detail. The next part is focused on the development of basic macroeconomic indicators that the CNB monitors when deciding on monetary policy. Subsequently, the development of the balance sheet of the banking sector is described to determine market-wide trend changes within the banking market and the effects of the CNB's monetary policy on the banking sector, an analysis of the revenues and costs of the banking market is carried out and effects of low interest rates on the profitability of the banking sector are derived. In the final part, balance sheets, revenues and costs of selected banks are analyzed. Based on the analysis, changes in the business of individual banks were described and the effects of low interest rates on individual banks are determined.
