Readers of Comics as a specific Subculture (The Analysis of reception Strategies)

Abstract:

Tato práce je exploratorní studií komiksového publika. Popisuje jej ze dvou úhlů pohledu – v první části se věnuje komiksovému publiku jako specifické sociální skupině, ve druhé části se zabýváme vztahem mezi čtenářem a komiksem s důrazem na motivy a strategie výběru i čtení komiksů. Těžištěm výzkumu jsou kvalitativní rozhovory se sedmnácti příslušníky komiksového publika, kteří byli vybráni metodou záměrného výběru kombinovanou s metodou sněhové koule. Tyto metody vedly k tomu, že se náš vzorek skládal z jedinců, kteří ve větší či menší míře participovali na komiksové kultuře. Po analýze rozhovorů jsme mohli konstatovat, že v České republice již existuje komiksová subkultura, i když není zdaleka tak rozvinutá jako v USA. Má své vlastní komunikační kanály a hranice určené čtenářskými kompetencemi v kombinaci s typickými činnostmi vycházejícími ze zvláštního vztahu k textu. V rámci vztahu k textu pozorujeme u fanoušků až fetišistické pouto ke komiksu, u nějž je pro čtenáře potěchou nejen samotná četba, ale také jeho vlastnictví a další rozhovory o něm. Komiks je pro své fanoušky určitým exkluzivním zbožím, které jim poskytuje zábavu i umělecký prožitek.

Abstract:

This document presents an exploratory type of study which is focused on the comics audience. It investigates the audience from two perspectives – firstly it examines the comics audience as a specific social group and secondly it examines the relationship between readers and comics when paying a special attention to reasons and strategies being behind of readers decisions. The qualitative interviews with the seventeen representatives of the comics audience presents the study focal point. The combination of two selection methods, purposeful selection and snowball method, was applied for the selection of the above mentioned study participants. The application of these two methods ensured that the investigated sample of personnel consisted of individuals who have already contributed, more or less, to the comics culture development. When completing the analyses of the interviews we got to the point that there is the comics subculture which have been already existing within the frame of the Czech republic but taking in account that this subculture is not as far developed as that one as in US. The Czech comics subculture has its own communication channels and border lines which are determined by the readers competencies in combination with typical activities having their origin in a specific relation to written text. When seeing the comics fans from the perspective of their relation to the written text we can recognize their fetishistic dependence on comics where the comics readers enjoy not only reading the comics but they enjoy also their possession and further discussion about them. The comics presents for their fans certain kind of an exclusive goods which gives them the both an amusement and an artistic enjoyment.
