The Romantic Vision in Margaret Mitchell´s Gone with the Wind

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis examines to what extent Scarlett O'Hara embodies the Southern Belle archetype in Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind. While Scarlett, at first glance, obeys most of the characteristics of the Southern Belle. Her loveliness, charm, and grace fit the ideal. However, her desires, pragmatism, and readiness to deviate from customary norms make her different from the traditional ideal. By comparison with other female characters, such as Melanie Hamilton and Ellen O'Hara, the thesis highlights how Scarlett's abandonment of traditional femininity disestablishes and ultimately redefines the Southern Belle archetype. The thesis also addresses the historical and cultural context in which the novel was composed. It addresses how the novel represents the Old South and the novel's position within Southern literature. In addition, Scarlett's romantic interactions with the other characters, especially with Rhett Butler, are examined based on power struggles and shifts in gender roles. Ultimately, the thesis contends that Scarlett is a representation and a contradiction of the Southern Belle ideal. This secures her position as one of American literature's most complex female protagonists.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá, do jaké míry Scarlett O'Hara ztělesňuje archetyp jižanské krásky v románu Margaret Mitchellové Jih proti Severu. Scarlett na první pohled splňuje většinu charakteristik jižanské krásky, její půvab, šarm a elegance odpovídají ideálu. Její touhy, pragmatismus a ochota odchýlit se od tradičních norem ji však odlišují od tradičního ideálu. Porovnáním s jinými ženskými postavami, jako jsou Melanie Hamiltonová a Ellen O'Hara, práce ukazuje, jak Scarlettino opuštění tradiční ženskosti narušuje a nakonec redefinuje archetyp jižanské krásky. Práce také zohledňuje historický a kulturní kontext, ve kterém byl román napsán. Zabývá se zobrazením starého Jihu a jeho pozicí v rámci jižanské literatury. Dále se zaměřuje na Scarlettiny romantické vztahy s ostatními postavami, zejména s Rhettem Butlerem, a zkoumá, jak jsou formovány mocenskými boji a posuny v genderových rolích. Nakonec práce tvrdí, že Scarlett je jak ztělesněním, tak i kontradikcí ideálu jižanské krásky, což ji činí jednou z nejkomplexnějších ženských postav v americké literatuře.
