Lycanthropy in American Popular Culture

Abstract:

The Bachelor?s Thesis is concerned with a cultural phenomenon of lycanthropy and its reflection in American popular culture. The primary aim is to demonstrate European origin of this tradition and compare it with the contemporary American concept of this problem. I intend to clarify historical basis for belief in werewolves on the European continent and their importance for our society. The major part of this thesis deals with American cinematography of the 20th and 21st century, its representation of lycanthropy throughout various genres and with assessment of the contrast between original folklore and requirements of the consumers.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na kulturní fenomén lykantropie a jeho odraz v americké populární kultuře. Primárním cílem je poukázat na evropské kořeny této tradice a porovnat je se současným americkým pojetím této problematiky. Ve své práci se pokouším objasnit historické základy víry ve vlkodlaky na evropském kontinentě a jejich důležitost pro tehdejší společnost. Hlavní část práce se pak zabývá především americkou kinematografií ve 20. a 21. století, jejím znázorněním lykantropie napříč různými žánry a zhodnocením kontrastu mezi původním folklórem a požadavky novodobé populace.
