Gender analysis of the development of female protagonists in Walt Disney's animation – analysis of the fairy tale Cinderella

Abstract:

V bakalářské práci se zabývám analýzou hlavní postavy a narativu vybraného pohádkového příběhu, a to z perspektivy genderu a feministické teorie. Zaměřuji se především na rozbor animované pohádky Popelka hollywoodského studia Walta Disneyho. V roce 1950 vyrobilo The Walt Disney Studios animovanou pohádku Popelka na náměty novely Charlese Perraulta a hlavní hrdinka se stala záhy ikonou pro soudobé diváky a divačky. Po více než padesáti letech se studio rozhodlo vytvořit další dvě pokračování – Popelka II: Splněný sen (2002) a Popelka 3: Ztracena v čase (2007). Postava Popelky je v animovaném filmu zpracovávána z více perspektiv a prošla od svého začátku vývojem ovlivněným společenskou situací. Cílem této práce je tedy rozebrat z perspektivy feministické teorie proměny této filmové hrdinky a zároveň představit základní aspekty, které na toto formování obrazu měly značný vliv a spoluvytvářely tak určitý sociální konstrukt.

Abstract:

In my bachelor’s thesis I deal with the analysis of the main character and the narrative of a selected fairy tale from the perspective of gender and feminist theory. I am focusing above all on the analysis of the animated fairy tale Cinderella by The Walt Disney Studios. In 1950, The Walt Disney Studios produced the animated fairy tale Cinderella based on Charles Perrault's novel and the main character quickly became an icon for contemporary viewers. After more than fifty years, the studio decided to create two more sequels - Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002) and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007). The character of Cinderella is portrayed from multiple perspectives in the animated film and has undergone a development influenced by the social situation since its inception. The aim of this work is therefore to analyze the transformation of this movie heroine from the perspective of feminist theory and at the same time to present the basic aspects that had a significant influence on the formation of this image and thus co-created a certain social construct.
