Applications of NMR Spectroscopy to Study Transition-Metal Complexes with Nitrogen-Based Ligands

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje NMR studii komplexů přechodných kovů s dusíkatými ligandy, se zaměřením na deriváty purinu. Několik nových komplexů Pt(IV) a Ir(III) bylo připraveno a charakterizováno pomocí NMR spektroskopie. Zvláštní pozornost byla kladena na popis tautomerismu na purinovém kruhu. Další NMR studie byly zaměřeny na řešení různých strukturních poblémů u komplexů vanadu, palladia a platiny. Část získaných experimentálních dat byla využita pro kalibraci DFT výpočtů strukturních parametrů a NMR chemických posunů. Díky kalibraci bylo dosaženo RMSD ~ 1 – 2 pm pro vazebné délky a ~ 1 – 3 ppm pro NMR posuny v porovnání s experimentem. Optimalizovaná metoda byla následně testována na komplexech palladia a platiny, kde posloužila k identifikaci některých sloučenin, které nebylo možné jednoznačně určit pouze na základě experimentálních NMR dat. Vznik a způsob šíření relativistického příspěvku k NMR stínění na lehkém atomu byly studovány na komplexech iridia. Kromě známých veličin ovlivňujících relativistické stínění, jako je druhá mocnina protonového čísla těžkého atomu, s-charakter vazby mezi lehkým a těžkým atomem a energetický rozdíl obsazených a neobsazených molekulových orbitalů, byl identifikován další důležitý faktor – zastoupení d-orbitalů těžkého kovu ve vazbě s lehkým atomem ligandu. Relativně málo známý vztah mezi relativistickými příspěvky k NMR stínění a veličinami v EPR spektroskopii (g-tensor a hyperjemné štěpení) byl využit pro vysvětlení pozorovaných závislostí.

Abstract:

Thesis deals with NMR study of transition-metal complexes with nitrogen-based ligands, especially purines. Several new complexes of Pt(IV) and Ir(III) with purines were synthesized and characterized by using NMR spectroscopy, with special attention to tautomeric equilibria. The NMR study was also performed for selected complexes of V(V), Pd(II), and Pt(II) to determine their structures and to rationalize various structure-related phenomena. Subsequently, some of the experimental results were used to calibrate DFT approach for calculating the structure and NMR chemical shifts. DFT calibration resulted in a very good agreement with experiment, when the bond lengths were reproduced with RMSD ~ 1–2 pm and the NMR chemical shifts with RMSD ~ 1–3 ppm. Calibrated methodology was also tested for Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes, where it was used to identify several species, which could not be characterized solely by experiment. The origin and propagation of relativistic effects on the NMR chemical shift of the light atom were analyzed for a series of iridium complexes. Beside the known factors influencing the spin-orbit corrections to the NMR chemical shift, such as the square of proton number of heavy element, the ligand s-character of the metal-ligand bond, or the energy difference between occupied and virtual orbitals, additional important factor was identified – d-orbital contribution of the heavy transition metal in the bond with light element. This finding was rationalized using known perturbation expressions for calculations of EPR parameters (g-tensor and hyperfine coupling), indicating an interesting link between the relativistic spin-orbit NMR shielding and EPR observables.
