Menstrual cycle alters face preference

Abstract:

Počas menštruačného cyklu ženy dochádza k rade psychických zmien. Jednou z nich je zmena percepcie mužských tvárí. Tento kognitívny mechanizmus má evolučné korene a súvisí s teóriou zmiešaných (mixed) partnerských stratégií. Adaptívnou stratégiou mohla byť voľba jedného muža s kvalitnou génovou výbavou, ktorý by potomkovi zaručil ?dobré gény? (krátkodobé stratégia) a voľba druhého, skôr sociálneho partnera, ktorý by mu zaistil potrebnú starostlivosť (dlhodobá stratégia). Ženy neužívajúce hormonálnu antikoncepciu by mali v plodnej fáze cyklu preferovať maskulínne tváre mužov a v neplodnej (luteálna fáza, menzes) tváre mierne feminné. Výskumu sa zúčastnilo 63 žien neužívajúce hormonálnu antikoncepciu. Výskum pozostával z dvoch metód. LH 28 slúžil k detekcií luteinizačného hormónu v moči, čím rozdelil respondentky na ovulujúce a neovulujúce. Metóda FACEPREF zaznamenávala tvárové preferencie. Výsledky potvrdili náš predpoklad. Našli sme signifikantnú pozitívnu koreláciu medzi fertilnou fázou a preferenciou maskulínnych rysov (r = 0,42). Alternatívne, ženy v luteálnej fáze preferovali tváre nemaskulínne. Tiež sme zistili zaujímavé skutočnosti: nezaznamenali sme signifikantný rozdiel v preferenciách u mladších a starších respondentiek a tiež sme nezaznamenali signifikantný rozdiel v preferenciách u žien, ktoré mali partnerský vzťah a sex za posledných 14 dní a tými, čo ich nemali.

Abstract:

During menstrual cycle of women there exist several psychic changes. One of them is change of perception of male faces. This cognitive mechanism has evolutionary roots and relates to the theory of mixed partnership strategies. Adaptive strategy could represent choice of man with high-quality gene pool who is able to guarantee ?good genes? to his descendant (short strategy). Second strategy represents choice of social partner, who is able to ensure necessary care to this descendent (long-term strategy). Women not using hormonal contraceptives should prefer masculine faces in their fertile phase of the cycle and slighty femine faces in their infertile phase (luteal phase, menses). Our research consists of 63 women not using hormonal contraceptives. There are two methods employed in this research. LH 28 was used for detection of luteinizing hormone in urine that enabled us to divide the respondents to ovulating ones and to no ovulating ones. The method of FACEPREF tested facial preferences. Final results confirmed our assumption. We found out that there is a significant positive correlation between the fertile phase and preference for masculine traits (r = 0,42). Alternatively, women in the luteal phase prefered nonmasculine faces. We also found out an interesting fact: there is no significant difference in the preferences of younger and older respondents. Consequently we have also not observed significant differences in preferences among women having partner relationship and sex at the last 14 days and those who did not have them.
