Abstract:

Témou bakalárskej práce sú zdvorilostné stratégie a ich používanie podľa Zdvorilostnej teórie Brownovej a Levinsona. Táto teória vidí zdvorilosť ako spôsob vykonania aktu ohrozenia tváre (face threatening act) tak, aby bol v čo najväčšej miere znížený jeho dopad na adresáta. Brownová a Levinson ponúkajú niekoľko stratégii na vykonanie aktu ohrozenia tváre. Táto práca sa zameriava na rozdiel medzi pozitívnou a negatívnou zdvorilosťou a vplyv sociálnej vzdialenosti na výber jednej zo stratégii. Rozdiel v použití stratégií je ilustrovaný na príklade rozhovorov z amerických talk show. Pozitívne zdvorilostné stratégie prevažujú v rozhovoroch s celebritami, keďže v nich je cieľom vytvoriť uvoľnenú atmosféru a presvedčiť hosťa, aby sa podelil aj o informácie, ktoré by inak považoval za súkromné. Negatívne zdvorilostné stratégie sa viac využívajú v politických rozhovoroch na vyjadrenie rešpektu voči hosťovi bez toho, aby bol vyvolaný dojem zaujatosti. Formulácia otázok a využívanie stratégii tak závisia jednak na tom, aká odpoveď je očakávaná od adresáta, zároveň však aj na spôsobe akým má otázka pôsobiť na publikum. Práca tak poukazuje na to, že výber zdvorilostnej stratégie závisí od mnohých faktorov a je nielen odrazom vzájomných vzťahov účastníkov konverzácie ale takisto samotným výberom stratégie sú tieto vzťahy ďalej formované.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the politeness strategies and their usage according to Politeness Theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). This theory sees politeness as a way of producing a face threatening act in a way that maximally mitigates its negative impact on the addressee. Brown and Levinson offer several strategies for performing a face threatening act. This thesis concentrates on the difference between positive and negative politeness and the influence of social distance on the choice of one of the strategies. The difference in the usage of the strategies is illustrated on the example of American talk show interviews. Positive politeness strategies prevail in interviews with celebrities, since their goal is to create a relaxed atmosphere and convince the guest to share information that he would otherwise consider private. Negative politeness strategies are used more often in political interviews as a way of showing respect towards the interviewee without creating impression of bias. Formulation of questions and use of strategies thus depend on the answer that is to be solicited as well as on the effect on the audience. This thesis thus attempts to prove that the choice of politeness strategy depends on many factors and is not merely a reflection of relationships between conversation participants, but that the choice of strategy also influences how these relationships are being reshaped.
