Spacialized Narration in Snatch

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá filmem Podfuck režiséra Guye Ritchieho. Studie je vypracována jako neoformalistická analýza, která se zaměřuje na spacializovaný narativ tohoto filmu. Práce je tvořena dvěma částmi: první je ekonomický a kulturně-historický kontext filmu a druhá je samotná neoformalistická analýza složená ze stylistické a naratologické analýzy.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is a neoformalist analysis of Guy Ritchie’s second full-length picture Snatch. The thesis is structured into four parts: In the introduction, it gives reasons, why Snatch was picked and an overall view on the methodological and theoretical background of neoformalist analysis. It also gives a brief introduction of neoformalism in historical background. The first of two main parts of this bachelor thesis is the economical and cultural-historical background of Snatch. There can be found many useful facts about making Snatch and its integration in the existing film production. It gives an overall income, age accessibility, various premieres of the movie in the U.S.A. and Europe, casting and international names of Snatch. An important section of this part is filmgoers’ and critics’ reflections. Filmgoers’ reactions were mainly taken and processed from two internet servers – CSFD and IMDb. Critics’ reactions were taken from several significant internet servers, which address on film reviews and criticism. The last section is a complex view on the product variations of the film – the soundtrack and the DVD. The DVD part gives the content of DVD and various DVD versions for various regions. The most significant part of this thesis is the neoformalist analysis divided into naratological and stylistic analyses. In the narratological analysis, there can be found a characteristic of narration, the role of narrator and, what is the most important for the neoformalist analysis, there is a dissection of the dominant of the film – the effects of spacialization in Snatch. Film theoretician Sean Cubbit tags this film as a neobaroque film. The neobaroque narration is one of new ways of narrating in contemporary Hollywood production. This analysis deals with the effects of neobaroque spacialization in Snatch. In short, spacialization means that narration in films as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Usual Suspects, Snatch and Groundhound Day only appears to be narrative. In fact, it is the result of many possible transits through a database of narrative events whose coincidence is more structural or even architectural than temporal. In the second part of the neoformalist analysis, there can be found a stylistic dissection of Ritchie’s Snatch. This analysis deals with acting of actors and visual properties of film screen. Shortly, it can be said that Snatch is a post-modern movie, which was made in fast action style that tries to astound its filmgoers by flashbacks, split screens and stop/fast/slow sequences. In a whole, these four parts make the complex neoformalist analysis of Snatch.
