Identity theory and it's compatibility with theories of consciousness.

Abstract:

Daná práce se zabývá zkoumáním možnosti kompatibility Teorie identity s empirickými teoriemi vědomí. Teorie identity je jedna z významných teorií filozofie mysli 20. století, která pomocí proklamace identity mentálních a neurálních stavů. Tímto způsobem se měl nabídnout teoretický rámec pro vyrovnání s problematičnosti psychofyzického dualismu a "vysvětlující mezerou" prostřednictvím odůvodnění empirického výzkumu mentálních stavů nebo vědomí obecněji. Empirické teorie vědomí jsou teoriemi z oblasti interdisciplinárního výzkumu vědomí, jádro kterého tvoří neurověda. Na začátku tohoto zkoumání stručně představím klíčové pojmy. Dále se posuneme k představení empirických teorií vědomí s detailnějším představením teorie integrované informace (IIT). Komplexnost těchto představení necháme omezit účelem dané práce a při rozboru teorií se rovnou zaměříme na body, které se ukážou jako klíčové pro zkoumání kompatibility s teorií identity. V následující části práce podrobně představíme teorii identity, v neposlední řadě také v kontextu jejího vzniku, ale hlavně se zaměříme na její teoretický rámec, neboť jsou klíčovými faktory pro naše zkoumání. Rovněž se v průběhu představení a rozboru zaměříme na již naznačené v předchozí části práce body, které jsou klíčové pro zkoumanou problematiku. Závěrem se podíváme na oblast interdisciplinárního výzkumu vědomí, která při prvním pohledu nabízí vhodné paradigma pro kompatibilitu filozofického a empirického výzkumu vědomí, a to je oblast zkoumání neurálních korelátů vědomí (NCC). Představíme danou oblast výzkumu, rozebereme její roli v rámci interdisciplinárního výzkumu vědomí, vztah k filozofickým a empirickým teoriím vědomí, a následně vyhodnotíme možnosti propojení teorie identity s NCC ve vztahu ke zkoumané problematice. Závěrem práce se na základě našeho zkoumání pokusíme o představení dalšího možného pojetí teorie identity, pomocí kterého, jak se pokusíme ukázat, by postavení teorie identity lépe odpovídá nárokům, který současný interdisciplinární výzkum vědomí klade na filozofické teorie. V rámci tohoto pojetí se teorie identity představuje jako metodologický předpoklad, a to dokonce dualistický.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the potential compatibility between the Identity Theory and empirical theories of consciousness. Theory of identity, a philosophical conception from the 20th century, asserts that mental states are identical to neural states. In its original context, this identity theory offers a theoretical framework for addressing the challenges of psychophysical dualism and the "explanatory gap" through a justification of empirical research into mental states (or consciousness in general). Empirical theories of consciousness derive from interdisciplinary research in neuroscience, forming the core of the study. The paper begins with an introduction of the key concepts, followed by a detailed presentation of empirical theories of consciousness, with a focus on Integrated Information Theory (IIT). It limits the complexity of these presentations to serve the purpose of this thesis, immediately focusing on points critical for examining compatibility with Identity Theory. The subsequent sections thoroughly introduce Identity Theory, particularly in the context of its origins, but mainly focus on its theoretical framework as these are key factors for our investigation. The discussion also highlights points indicated in the previous sections that are crucial for the examined issues. The thesis concludes by looking at the area of interdisciplinary research in consciousness, which initially seems to offer a suitable paradigm for the compatibility of philosophical and empirical research in consciousness, specifically the area of Neural Correlates of Consciousness (NCC). This section presents the research area, discusses its role within interdisciplinary research in consciousness, its relation to philosophical and empirical theories of consciousness, and subsequently evaluates the possibilities of integrating Identity Theory with NCC concerning the examined issue. Finally, the thesis attempts to present another understanding of the Identity Theory, which could meet the demands that current interdisciplinary research of consciousness imposes on philosophical theories and show greater extent of compatibility with empirical theories of consciousness. In this conception, Identity Theory is presented as a methodological presupposition, which is moreover conceived dualistically.
