Smileys, Emoticons, and Emojis as a Part of Written Language

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the use and function of emoticons and emojis in written communication and their meaning in practice. The thesis begins with a definition of emoticons and emojis. This is then followed by a brief look at their origins and the reasons for their creation to better understand their original purposes and how they developed to become a regular part of computer-mediated communication. After the introductory information, emoticons and emojis undergo a detailed investigation exploring some of their possible properties of meaning. The exploration is done on the basis of Geoffrey Leech's seven types of meaning. First the meaning type is explained with application to words, as originally intended by Leech. Each meaning type is then applied to emoticons and emojis. The practical component of this thesis analyzes data collected from surveys and twitter samples to draw conclusions on how well emoticons and emojis perform in conveying each meaning type. An additional section on the gradability of emoticons and emojis is also attached to this section. Following this is a short review of existing literature and data on the variations of emoticon and emojis use according to age, gender, culture, motivation of communication, and mental state of the writer.

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na použití a funkce emotikonů a emoji jako součásti psaného jazyka a jejich význam v praxi. Práce začíná definicí emotikonů a emoji. Dále pokračuje stručný přehled proč a jak vznikly a také jak se postupně vyvíjely až do dnešní podoby, jako součást počítačem zprostředkované komunikace. Po úvodních informacích následuje podrobný rozbor vlastnosti emotikonů a emoji z hlediska významu. Podkladem tohoto rozboru je teorie sedmi typů významů podle Geoffreyho Leeche. Nejdříve je typ významu vysvětlen ve smyslu slov. Jednotlivé typy významu jsou dále postupně aplikovány na emotikony a emoji. Praktická část práce rozebírá data dotazníků a také ukázky z Twitteru a posuzuje, zda jsou emotikony a emoji schopny vyjádřit rozdílné typy významu. Přídavná část je zaměřena na možnost jejich stupňování. Práce je zakončena přehledem existující literatury a nalezených dat, které probírají použití emotikonů a emoji z hlediska věku, pohlaví, kultury, motivace komunikace a mentální stav uživatele.
