On National TV? In Front of My Salad? or: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of Tucker Carlson's Takes on the January 6 U.S. Capitol Attack on Fox news

Anotace:

Jedním z nejsledovanějších pořadů, který obhajoval demonstranty útoku na Kapitol Spojených států 6. ledna 2021, v amerických populárních médiích byl Tucker Carlson Tonight na kanálu Fox News. Cílem této práce je analyzovat diskurz v tomto pořadu s využitím postupů Kritické analýzy diskuzu pro odhalení použitých diskurzivních taktik. V práci je navíc provedena mutimodální analýza, která se zaměřuje na vizuální stránku pořadu. Práce hodnotí způsob, kterým se vizuální stránka doplňuje s mluveným obsahem.

Abstract:

One of the most notable outliers in defending and siding with the protestors of the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack in popular American news media was the Fox News program Tucker Carlson Tonight. The aim of this thesis is to examine the discourse on the show, surveying ten video clips covering the topic of January 6, utilizing Critical Discourse Analysis in order to reveal the discursive tactics employed. In addition, a multimodal analysis focusing on the visual aspect of the show is performed. The thesis evaluates the way the visuals complement the message being conveyed on the show.
