Support vector machines for functional data

Abstract:

Klasifikace funkcionálních dat patří mezi základní úlohy moderního odvětví statistiky, které nese název analýza funkcionálních dat a které se věnuje specifickému typu dat závislých na časové nebo jiné proměnné. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá metodou podpůrných vektorů, jedním z oblíbených přístupů ke klasifikační problematice, a to právě v kontextu funkcionálních dat. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na práci s takovým typem dat, na klasifikační modely a podrobněji pak právě na metodu podpůrných vektorů a některé přístupy, jež ji umožňují aplikovat na funkcionální objekty. Záměrem praktické části je porovnání představených klasifikačních metod na simulovaných a reálných datových souborech. Pozornost je věnována zejména různým funkcionálním přístupům u metody podpůrných vektorů, jejich úspěšnosti klasifikace a také závislosti na parametrech použitých při simulaci dat. Využity jsou také specifické nástroje pro práci s funkcionálními objekty, konkrétně derivace, které můžeme ke klasifikaci často velmi úspěšně použít namísto původních (simulovaných nebo pozorovaných) křivek.

Abstract:

Classification of functional data is one of the major problems in a modern part of statistics called functional data analysis. In this field, specific objects that depend on time or another variable are studied. This thesis deals with support vector machines, one of the most commonly used methods for data classification, within the context of functional data. The theoretical part of this thesis focuses on this type of data, on models for classification, and more specifically on support vector machines. We concentrate further on various approaches that enable the use of this method for functional data classification. The aim of the practical part is to compare proposed methods on simulated and real data sets. We concentrate primarily on different functional approaches of support vector machines and their accuracy of classification. Furthermore, we examine the dependence of accuracy on the parameters used for data simulation. Certain tools for functional data are considered, particularly derivatives. They can provide even more accurate classification results than the original (simulated or observed) curves.
