Moral Reasoning and Prosocial Personal Characteristics in the Context of Personal Identity in Middle Age

Abstract:

Cílem studie bylo zjistit, zda se jedinci s rozdílnou úrovní morálky péče projevují jako osoby s odlišným profilem stylů identity a prosociálních charakteristik reprezentovaných faktorem Poctivost – Pokora v osobnostním modelu HEXACO. Vycházeli jsme z konceptu morálky péče C. Gilliganové, která popsala vývoj morálky péče od egoistického stádia, přes konvenční úroveň akcentující ohleduplnost k ostatním i za cenu vlastního sebeobětování, až po rovnocenný přístup k péči o sebe i o druhé. Do výzkumu bylo zahrnuto 70 osob středního věku (34 žen a 36 mužů). Vývojové úrovně morálky péče jsme měřili pomocí metody polostrukturovaného Rozhovoru k etice péče (ECI), která dosud nebyla v českém prostředí využita, a jejíž autorkou je E. A. Skoe. Dále byl účastníkům administrován online dotazník, který se skládal ze dvou samo-statných dotazníků HEXACO-PI-R 60 a Identity Style Inventory. Na základě výzkumů E. A. Skoe o vztazích mezi morálkou péče a identitou jsme předpokládali, že pro osoby s vyšší úrovní morálky péče bude charakteristický informační styl identity. Tato hypotéza byla podpořena statistickou analýzou. Také jsme očekávali, že jedinci s vyšší úrovní morálky péče se budou vyznačovat vyšším skórem faktoru Poctivost a pokora a dále, že existují statistické rozdíly v dosahování úrovní morálky péče mezi muži a ženami. Analýza dat však v tomto směru nepřinesla žádné statisticky průkazné výsledky. Výsledky mohly být ovlivněny chybějící zkušeností s využitím metody ECI v českém prostředí i složením respondentů, jejichž průměrný věk 37 let je řadí spíše do rané fáze středního věku.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to find out if individual people with different levels of morality of care behave as people with different identity styles and diferent profiles of prosocial characteristics, represented by the Honesty – Humility factor from the HEXACO personality model. The study is based on the Carol Gilligan´s concept of morality of care and her description of moral development stages: starting with the egoistic stage, going through the conventional stage to the last stage of equal attitude to care for ourselves and for others. The research sample was formed by 70 people at middle age (34 women and 36 men). The stages of moral deve-lopment were measured using the method of semi-structured Ethic of Care Interview (ECI). This method was described by E. A. Skoe and has not been used in Czech Republic before. The participants were also administred an on-line questionnaire which consisted of two individual questionnaires, HEXACO-PI-R 60 and Identity Style Inventory. Based on Skoe´s research studies about relation between morality of care and indentity, we assumed that the typical style of identity for people with higher levels of morality of care would be the informational style. This hypothesis was supported by statistical analysis. We also expected that individuals with higher levels of morality of care would have higher score of the Honesty – Humility factor and that the research would show statistical differences between men and women in reaching levels of morality of care. However, the data analysis did not provide any confirmative results in this respect. The results may have been influenced by the deficient experience with using the ECI method in Czech environment or by the structure of sample – the average age of the research participants was 37 which is rather the early phase of middle age.
