Mathematical modeling of two-phase flow

Abstract:

V disertační práci je zpracován ucelený přehled používaných modelů a technik pro řešení dvoufázového proudění, jejichž numerické řešení lze založit na metodě konečných objemů. Modely a techniky jsou zde podrobně diskutovány a je uveden rozsah jejich využitelnosti. Dále je zde s užitím průměrovacího procesu odvozen obecný dvoutekutinový model, který popisuje proudění dvou stlačitelných, nevazkých a tepelně nevodivých tekutin bez výměny hmoty. Pro numerické řešení dvoutekutinových modelů je prezentován algoritmus založený na metodě konečných objemů, který pro aproximaci toků využívá AUSM+ schéma. Na řešených testovacích úlohách je ukázáno, že čtyřrovnicový dvoutekutinový model bez energetických rovnic s dvojicí Taitových stavových rovnic není příliš vhodný pro řešení Toumiova "shock tube" problému se silným vlivem termodynamiky, avšak lze s jeho využitím velmi dobře řešit problém vodovodního kohoutku. Pro dostatečně přesné řešení Toumiova "shock tube" problému je dále implementován šestirovnicový dvoutekutinový model s energetickými rovnicemi. Při numerickém řešení této úlohy byla navíc zvýšena přesnost použitých schémat pomocí lineární rekonstrukce primitivních veličin s minmod limiterem. Dosažené výsledky tak zachycují velmi ostře nespojitosti vzniklé v proudovém poli. V disertační práci je dále diskutován a řešen tzv. třírovnicový model. Jedná se o redukovaný dvoutekutinový model uzpůsobený pro řešení proudění s volnou hladinou. Stlačitelnost kapaliny je zde modelována také pomocí Taitovy stavové rovnice. Pro řešení modelu byl navržen obdobný algoritmus numerického řešení využívající AUSM+ schéma, které zde rovněž bylo použito pro aproximaci nekonzervativní části modelu. Navržený numerický řešič je verifikován na úloze protržení hráze. Popsaný model je dále validován na problému vzestupu bubliny, což je úloha s komplexním rozvrstvením tekutiny v tíhovém poli. Aplikační část předkládané disertační práce je zaměřena na řešení problému z průmyslové praxe týkajícího se odlučování oleje a vzduchu v tlakových nádobách šroubových kompresorů. Pro numerické simulace těchto úloh byl použit dvoutekutinový model implementovaný ve výpočtovém systému ANSYS Fluent. Parametry výpočtového modelu byly nastaveny v souladu s provedenými experimentálními měřeními. Na základě provedených analýz a vyhodnocení výsledků numerických simulací dvoufázového proudění oleje a vzduchu ve třech zcela odlišných tlakových nádobách jsou stanovena obecná doporučení pro návrh tlakových nádob s ohledem na zefektivnění procesu oddělení obou fází. Navazující numerické simulace dále prokazují, že v tlakových nádobách štíhlých tvarů probíhá separační proces efektivněji, oproti tlakovým nádobám zavalitých tvarů.

Abstract:

The Ph.D. thesis presents a detailed overview of models and techniques used for two-phase flows modeling, which can be numerically solved using the finite volume method. The models and techniques are discussed in detail, including their extent of validity. Using averaging approach, the derivation of the general two-phase two-fluid model is shown. The model is suitable to describe the flow of two compressible, inviscid and thermally non-conducting fluids without mutual mass exchange. A numerical algorithm for the numerical solution of selected two-fluid models is proposed. The solver is based on the finite volume method and employs the AUSM+ scheme for the approximation of numerical fluxes. The numerical results of selected test cases show that the four-equation two-fluid model without energy equations coupled with the Tait equations of state for both fluids is not able to solve the Toumi shock tube problem correctly, which is strongly influenced by the system thermodynamics. On the other hand, the four-equation model is very suitable for the numerical solution of the water faucet problem. To solve the Toumi shock tube problem more accurately, the six-equation two-fluid model is implemented. It is shown that the results of numerical simulations achieved by the proposed algorithm, which was improved by the linear reconstruction of primitive variables by means of the minmod limiter, are able to capture discontinuities in the flow field very sharply. In this work, the three-equation model for free surface flows, which is derived from two-fluid models and extended with the Tait equation of state, is discussed and solved. Similarly to the aforementioned models, the three-equation model was solved using own developed numerical algorithm, which utilizes the AUSM+ scheme for the computation of the non-conservative part of the model. The proposed finite volume solver was verified on the dam break problem. The three-equation model is additionally validated on the rising bubble problem, which is a task with complex stratification in the gravity field. The practical part of the Ph.D. thesis focuses on the separation of air and oil in pressure vessels of screw compressors. The two-fluid model implemented in the computing system ANSYS Fluent was used to solve these tasks. The parameters of the computational model were set in accordance with the experimental measurements. On the basis of performed analyses and numerical simulations of phase separation in three different pressure vessels, general suggestions how to make the separation process of both phases more effective are proposed. Additional numerical simulations also showed that the separation process of both phases is generally more effective in slim shape pressure vessels than in thick shape ones.
