Romanticism and Romantic in Josef Váchal`s Artwork dedicated to Bohemian Forest

Abstract:

Jádro této práce tvoří analýza romantických prvků v díle malíře, grafika a spisovatele Josefa Váchala. Autorka se soustředila na tvorbu inspirovanou šumavským krajem: knihy Šumava umírající a romantická, Očarovaná Šumava, Christian Heinrich Spiess a "dopis - román" Živant a Umrlanti. Tato díla jsou rozebrána z hlediska předem zvolených kategorií, vycházejících z ústředních témat romantismu: 1. Příroda a krajina, 2. Smysly, 3. Smrt a zánik, 4. Lidové inspirace, 5. Hrůzné, strašidelné a groteskní a 6. Stylizace. Cílem bylo zjistit, jakým způsobem Váchal dokázal tato témata uchopit a významově posunout. Vzhledem k jeho vztahu k německé kultuře i geografické poloze Šumavy se práce orientuje převážně na romantismus německý.

Abstract:

The work is focused on analyzing romantic elements in artwork of Josef Váchal, a Czech painter, graphic artist, and writer. The analysis was based on artwork inspired by the mountain range of Šumava in Southern Bohemia. Váchal is author of books such as "Šumava umírající a romantická" (Šumava Dying and Romantic), "Očarovaná Šumava" (Bewitched Šumava), "Christian Heinrich Spiess" and "Živant a umrlanti“ (Living Man and Corpses). These books are examined in terms of selected categories based on the main themes of Romanticism: 1. Nature and Landscape, 2. Senses, 3. Death and Extinction, 4. Folk Inspirations, 5. Creepy, Scary, and Grotesque and 6. Stylization. The main aim was to find out how Váchal semantically transformed these motives. Due to his relationship with the German culture and also geographical site of Šumava this work is mostly focused on Romanticism in German context.
