Coping strategies for medical students

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou copingových strategií u studentů zdravotnických oborů. V teoretické části je obecně popsán stres, jeho důsledky na zdravotní stav a coping. Dále je v teoretické části popisováno vývojové období mladého věku a adolescence a to zejména kvůli věkovému období respondentů. Neméně důležitá je i popis zátěžových situací zažívaných zdravotníky, možnosti řešení stresových situací. Popsána byla i pandemická situace covid-19 a její vliv na studium se zdravotnickým zaměřením. V praktické části byl využit kvalitativní výzkum. Formou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru byly získány data, která byla zpracována v programu ATLAS.ti. V tomto programu byli ze získaných dat formou rozhovoru vytvořeny kódy, které byly následně využity k tvorbě myšlenkových map. Nejčastější stresory objevující se ve školním prostředí jsou zejména náročnost studia, na kterou navazuje i časová náročnost studia, dále zkouškové období a s tím související strach z neúspěchu a dále pocit nátlaku, vytvářený negativním chování vyučujícího. Nejčastější stresory v nemocničním prostředí jsou pro studenty zdravotnických oborů zejména úmrtí pacienta, komplikace pacienta a strach z ohrožení pacienta. Jako nejčastější řešení stresových situací udávali studenti zdravotnických oborů fyzickou aktivitu, relaxaci a sdílení problému s druhou osobou. Motivace pro studenty, proč nadále setrvávat ve zdravotnictví jsou zejména altruismus, zainteresovanost v oblasti zdravotnictví, pozitivní chování vyučujícího a pozitivní chování pacientů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of coping strategies for nursing students. The theoretical section generally describes stress, its consequences on health and coping. Furthermore, the developmental period of young age and adolescence is described in the theoretical section, mainly because of the age of the respondents. Equally important is the description of stress situations experienced by health professionals, the possibility of dealing with stress situations. The covid-19 pandemic situation and its effect on health-oriented studies were also described. The practical part used qualitative research. In the form of a semi-structured chat, the data that was processed in the ATLAS.ti program was obtained. In this program, codes were created from the collected data in the form of an interview, which were then used to create mind maps. In particular, the most common stressors occurring in the school environment are the rigors of study, followed by the time-consuming nature of study, the examination period and the associated fear of failure, as well as the feeling of pressure created by the negative behaviour of the teacher. The most common stressors in hospital settings for medical students are in particular patient death, patient complications and fear of patient endangerment. Medical students cited physical activity, relaxation and sharing problems with the other person as the most common solutions to stressful situations. In particular, altruism, health-care interaction, positive teaching behaviour and positive patient behaviour are the motivations for students to remain in the health sector.
