Racism in children's literature in Latin America: José Martí and La Edad de Oro

Abstract:

This thesis deals with an analysis of stories "La muñeca negra" and "El Padre Las Casas" written by Cuban author José Martí, which were published in the magazine La Edad de Oro. The analysis focuses on the elements of racism and anti-racism expressed by main protagonists of these stories. The aim of the thesis was to point on the didactic intention, with which Martí wrote these stories; to represent the way, how Martí presents the issue of racism to children; find out whether this method is a good example of how should be these topics submitted to chidren. Another goal of this thesis was to explain why it is easy for children to understand the signs of racial disrimination in these stories. The beginning of the thesis deals with racism and children´s literature, both focus not only on the situation in general, but also on the situation in Latin America and Cuba, to which is connected the introduction to the life and work of José Martí.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou povídek “La muñeca negra” a “El Padre Las Casas” kubánského autora José Martího, které byly publikovány v časopise La Edad de Oro. Analýza se zaměřuje na prvky rasismu a antirasismu vyjádřené prostřednictvím hlavních hrdinů těchto dvou povídek. Cílem bylo poukázat na didaktický záměr, se kterým Martí tyto povídky napsal; představit způsob, jakým Martí prezentuje dětem téma rasismu; zjistit, zda je tento způsob dobrým příkladem toho, jak by měly být témata tohoto typu dětem předkládána. Neposledním úkolem této práce bylo vysvětlit, proč je pro děti jednoduché v těchto povídkách pochopit náznaky rasové diskriminace. Začátek práce se věnuje rasismu a dětské literatuře, obojí zaměřené nejen na situaci obecně, ale i v Latinské Americe a na Kubě, na což navazuje seznámení s životem a dílem José Martího.
