Biblical inspirations in Jan Kasprowicz's Hymns (analysis of poem Dies irae)

Abstract:

Cílem mé práce bylo osvětlit problematiku básnického cyklu Hymny Jana Kasprowicze jenž vnesl do polské literatury na přelomu 19. a 20. století duchovní atmosféru evropského umění ve smyslu fin de siécle a zároveň novou formu básnické volné rytmické kompozice s nečekanými zvraty a neustále se měnícím pohyblivým proudem emocí. Cyklus skladeb znamenal i manifestační odklon od pozitivistické tendenčnosti a utilitarismu v poezii a návrat k biblické tradici předchozích období zejména romantismu. Je zcela evidentní že vznik Hymnů ovlivnil dramatický průběh událostí v autorově životě v letech 1899-1902 ale rovněž básníkův selský původ a jeho výchova. Domnívám se že vznik cyklu je do značné míry syntézou různých vlivů událostí a myšlenek jejichž spouštěcím mechanismem se stala nevěra Kasprowiczovy manželky Jadwigy.

Abstract:

In my work I wanted to illustrate some problems in the best know garner by Jan Kasprowicz - Hymns. Jan Kasprowicz is one of the best poets in the epoch of Polish modernism. The literature of Polish modernism had its clashes with God. The most famous, because in an original artistic form, is to be found in "Hymns" (Hymny -- 1902) by Jan Kasprowicz, especially in his "God the Holy, God the Mighty" (Święty Boże, Święty Mocny) and in "Dies irae", depicting, by means of numerous symbolizations and onomatopoeic series, a procession of humanity marching towards its demise. It is accompanied by the original mother of sin, blondhaired Eve, and by Satan. Utilizing the tradition of religious hymns -- Dies irae is ascribed to a Franciscan, Thomas of Celano. Quoting them abundantly the poet asks about the role of God in the world in which evil prevails, about the sense of suffering of the innocent, about God’s salvific power. Provocatively he demands a sign of his presence, and because God remains silent he forlornly calls Satan to occupy the empty space left by God.
