Female frequency in populations of gynodioecious species Cirsium heterophyllum (Asteraceae)

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou frekvence samic v populacích gynodioecického druhu Cirsium heterophyllum. Jedním z hlavních cílů byla optimalizace sběru dat, umožňujících co nejpřesněji detekovat frekvenci samic a podmínky prostředí, které potencionálně vysvětlují tuto frekvenci v populacích studovaného druhu a metodiky ke zjištění vhodných parametrů pro detekci výhody samic. Nejdůležitějšími závěry mé práce jsou: (1) Stanovená metodika se ukázala jako dobrý postup při stanovení frekvence samic v populacích Cirsium heterophyllum a také jako dobrý nástroj pro detekci stresu, dílčích i celkové výhody samic. (2) Frekvence samic se pohybovala od 39,7% do 67,8%. Hodnota celkové výhody samic vycházející z poměru mezi celkovým potomstvem samic a celkovým potomstvem hermafroditů na jedince byla 4,66. (3) Překvapivě vysoká celková výhoda samic může vysvětlovat poměrně vysoké frekvence samic v populacích C. heterophyllum nebo může souviset s méně obvyklým nukleárním pozadím dědičnosti samčí sterility. (4) Na celkové výhodě samic se pravděpodobně podílí jak různá alokace energetických zdrojů v rámci pohlaví, tak i výrazná parazitace, především nosatcovitými brouky (Curculionidae). (5) Hodnoty dílčích výhod samic, hodnota výhody celkové ani různé indikátory stresu nebyly schopné vysvětlit rozdíly ve frekvenci samic mezi populacemi, což může být podmíněno poměrně malým souborem sledovaných populací. (6) Jediným parametrem, který frekvenci samic v populacích vysvětloval, je hustota kvetoucích jedinců v populacích, což může být dáno intenzitou přenosu a tedy dostupností pylu pro samice v populacích, kde roste vzdálenost mezi kvetoucími jedinci (tedy i mezi samicemi a hermafrodity).

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyzes female frequency in populations of gynodioecious species Cirsium heterophyllum. One of the main objectives was to optimize data collection, allowing detecting as accurately as possible the frequency of females and environmental factors potentially explaining this frequency in populations and optimalization of methods to determine suitable parameters for detection female advantage. The most important conclusions of this work are:(1) The methods used in the thesis are powerful tool for the estimation of female frequency in the populations of Cirsium heterophyllum as well as for the detection of stress and particular and overall female advantages. (2) Female frequency varies between 39,7% and 67,8%. The degree of overall female advantage based on the ratio between the number of female/hermaphrodite progenies was 4,66. (3) Surprisingly high value of total female advantage can be in a good agreement with relatively frequency of females in Cirsium heterophyllum and it can be also associated with the relatively uncommon nuclear determination of male sterility. (4) The total female advantage is probably based both on the differentiated resource allocation within the sexes and on extensive parasitism, particularly via achene predation by weevils (Curculionidae). (5) Neither the values of particular female advantages nor the total female advantage nor the stress indicators can not be able to explain the variation in female frequency in populations, which can be a consequence of relative small dataset (13 populations). (6) The only parameter related to female frequency in populations was the density of flowering individuals within the populations, which is probably due to the pollen limitation of female reproductive success when the distances between flowering individuals (also between flowering females and hermaphrodites) increases with decrease of population density.
