Zygmunt Bauman's Modernity and the Holocaust and its Critics

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce rozebírá pojetí holocaustu Zygmunta Baumana a jeho kritiku. V první části práce je popsána Baumanova teorie holocaustu, která byla představena především v knize Modernita a holocaust. Baumanova analýza holocaustu stojí především na popisu role modernity, analýze německého antisemitismu a byrokracie spolu s rozborem povahy morálního jednání a vlivu vzdálenosti na morálku. Druhá část práce se zabývá kritikou Baumanovy teorie. Zde je rozebírána komplexní kritika A. J. Vetlesena, stejně jako kritika pojetí byrokracie od Paula du Gaye nebo historika Jehudy Bauera, který se věnuje i Baumanově modernitě. Kromě kritiky je v této práci také věnován prostor teoriím, které nejsou přímo kritikou Baumanovy teorie, ale jejich autoři v nich představují odlišné závěry než Bauman a tím pádem i výzvu pro jeho analýzu. Mezi tyto práce patří především Goldhagenova kniha Hitlerovi ochotní katani a analýza fungování koncentračních táborů od Wolfganga Sofskeho. Cílem této práce je tak shrnout kritiku a představit vlastní interpretaci Baumanovy analýzy holocaustu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is concerned with Zygmunt Bauman's analysis of the holocaust and its critique. In the first part of the thesis is discussed Bauman's theory of the holocaust which was introduced in his book Modernity and the holocaust. Bauman's analysis of the holocaust stands on description of modernity and its role as well as on analysis of German antisemitism and bureaucracy along with description of nature of moral conduct and influence of proximity upon morale. The second part of the thesis is dealing with critique of Bauman's theory. It contains comprehensive critique of A. J. Vetlesen as well as critique of Bauman's bureaucracy from Paul du Gay and historian Jehuda Bauer who is also writing about Bauman's modernity. Besides the critique the thesis is also examining theories which are not a direct critique of Bauman but nevertheless their authors offer different findings and thus pose a challenge for Bauman's theory. Among these works are Goldhagen's book Hitler's Willing Executioners and analysis of concentration camps order from Wolfgang Sofsky. The aim of the thesis is to summarize the critique and introduce own interpretation of Bauman's work on the holocaust.
