Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je zkoumání konceptu Panoptikonu s ohledem na jeho nedávné transformace v sociální teorii. Hlavní výzkumná otázka zní: Jeví se koncept Panoptikonu jako stále relevantní v rámci sociální teorie v „informačním věku“? Posun v použití konceptu a jeho význam bude interpretován s ohledem na technologické, ekonomické a sociální změny v rámci sociální struktury. Cílem je zjistit, jak se koncept Panoptikonu měnil, a posoudit jeho relevanci a analytický potenciál v teoretizování „informačního věku“ a při zkoumání nových médií jako Google, Amazon a Facebook. Tato teoretická práce bude založena na kritickém čtení konceptu Panoptikonu, jež rozvedl především Michel Foucault. Po demonstraci aktuálních praktik dohledu bude následovat konfrontace autorů, kteří rozšiřují původní koncept, nebo jeho teoretické nástupce. V rámci práce docházím k závěru, že koncept Panoptikonu nedokáže teoreticky postihnout nové praktiky dohledu, avšak jako metafora modernity a výchozí model pro další zkoumání se jeví jako použitelný.

Abstract:

The primary aim of the thesis is to describe recent transformations and uses of the concept of the Panopticon in social theory. The shifts in uses of the term and its meaning will be interpreted, with regard to particular technological, economic and social changes, such as changes in surveillance practices and social control. The aim is to identify how the concept of the Panopticon has changed, and to assess its relevance and analytical potential in theorizing the ‘information age’, and in researching new media like Google, Amazon and Facebook. The work will be based on a critical reading of the concept of the Panopticon as introduced by Michel Foucault. After a demonstration of particular advanced surveillance practices related to consumers, I will confront the uses of the concept (and its variations) by other authors and their more recent works. To conclude the concept of the Panopticon could still stand as a model of surveillance in social theory. However it is not sufficient to theoretically represent recent surveillance practices.
