Autonomy and privacy of patients in intensive care units

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda je dodržována autonomie a soukromí pacientů ve dvou vybraných ostravských nemocnicích (Fakultní nemocnice Ostrava a Městská nemocnice Ostrava-Fifejdy). Metodika: Průzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 77 pacientů. 56 pacientů bylo z fakultní nemocnice a 21 z městské. Průzkum probíhal od 1. prosince 2008 do 31. ledna 2009. Šetření bylo realizováno formou dotazníku. Výsledky: Šetřením bylo zjištěno, že dodržování autonomie a soukromí je v obou nemocnicích rozdílné. V celkovém poměru o něco hůře dopadla městská nemocnice. Bylo v ní však méně respondentů ochotných a schopných vyplnit dotazník, a proto mohou být výsledky nepřesné. V respektování autonomie na tom byla lépe fakultní nemocnice. Bylo spokojeno 63 % respondentů a v městské nemocnici 55 %. Co se týče soukromí, s jeho dodržováním bylo ve fakultní nemocnici spokojeno téměř 70 % respondentů a v městské nemocnici pouze necelých 50 % respondentů. Závěr: Pro zdravotnické pracovníky je důležité mít schopnost empatie. Jedině tak může být jejich přístup k pacientům takový, jaký pacienti očekávají. Autonomii a soukromí pacientů by se měli zdravotníci snažit zachovávat v každé situaci a stavu.

Abstract:

Object: The object of this thesis was to find out whether the autonomy and the privacy of patients were kept in two chosen Ostrava?s hospitals (Teaching Hospital Ostrava and Municipal Hospital Ostrava-Fifejdy). Methodology: 77 patinets were involved in this research. 56 patients were from Teaching hospital and 21 from Municipal hospital. The research took place from 1st December 2008 till 31st January 2009. The survey was realized in a questionnaire form. Results: It was discovered by this survey that the autonomy and the privacy keeping is different in both hospitals. Municipal hospital came out a little bit worse in the overall comparison. Though there were less obliging informants who would be able to fill in the form properly and that?s why the result can be inaccurate. Teaching hospital was better in the respect of the autonomy. 63 % of informants were satisfied at Teaching hospital and just 55 % at Municipal hospital. Nearly 70 % of informants were satisfied with the privacy keeping at Teaching hospital and less than 50 % of informants at Municipal hospital. Conclusion: It?s important to have an ability of the empathy for the medical workers. Just in this case their approach to patients can be such as patients expect. Medical workers should try to keep the autonomy and the privacy of patients in every situation.
