Echolocation of bats of the Pipistrellus pipistrellus species group in Europe and North Africa

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se zabývám netopýry ze skupiny Pipistrellus pipistrellus, jejíž druh Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Schreber, 1774) patří k nejrozšířenějším v Evropě. Tato skupina je zajímavá hlavně svou historií, kdy se u dlouhodobě studovaného druhu P. pipistrellus ukázalo, že v Evropě se nevyskytuje jen jeden druh z této skupiny ale dva sympatricky žijící druhy, které od sebe lze oddělit pouze na základě echolokace nebo genetické analýzy. V rešeršní části mé bakalářské práce shrnuji dosavadní poznatky o této skupině. Pro průběh speciačního procesu skupiny Pipistrellus pipistrellus byl velmi důležitý proces alopatrické speciace, díky kterému se utvořily středozemní populace této skupiny a došlo tak k rozdělení na dvě hlavní větve. Rozmanitost skupiny byla objevena s rozvojem molekulárně genetických analýz, které postupem času přináší stále nové poznatky, a dnes se jedná o velmi rozvětvenou skupinu, ve které je možné pozorovat například i hybridizaci. I když jsou si evropské druhy Pipistrellus pipistrellus a Pipistrellus pygmaeus (Leach, 1825) na první pohled velmi podobné, i zde se najde hodně morfologických rozdílů. Rozdílná je také potravní skladba těchto dvou druhů. Největší rozdíly jsou však v oblasti echolokace. Praktická část této práce je zaměřena na echolokaci vybraných druhů a poddruhů ze skupiny Pipistrellus pipistrellus. Analýzou 11 různých parametrů, které jsou pro tuto skupinu charakteristické a pro podobné srovnávací analýzy jsou běžně používány pro jednotlivé druhy, jsem se pokusila zjistit, zda hodnoty těchto parametrů jsou více podobné u příbuzných druhů než těch geneticky vzdálenějších, jak se dosud předpokládalo a zda se vyskytují i rozdíly mezi dvěma hlavními liniemi. Mé výsledky nepotvrdily žádnou podobnost mezi geneticky příbuznými druhy a i rozdíly mezi liniemi byly téměř vždy zásadně rozdílné. Během analýzy dat došlo také k objevu dvou různých fonických typů v oblasti Maroko.

Abstract:

In this thesis we study bats of the group Pipistrellus pipistrellus, whose species Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Schreber, 1774) is one of the most common in the Europe. This group has an interesting history. After many years, scientists found out that in Europe is not only one species but two sympatric ones. The species can be distinguished only by their echolocation parameters or by genetic analysis. In the first part of my thesis I tried to summarize all known information about this group. The role of speciation was very important for this group. It helped to established small population in the Mediterranean and some of them were able to develop into separated species. Also the whole group separated into two lineages. The diversity of this group was discovered with the help of genetics, which is helpful even nowadays. The European species P. pipistrellus and P. pygmaeus (Leach, 1825) are very similar in appearance but there are still many morphological differences among them. Their food strategy is quite different too. But the main difference can be found in their echolocation. The second part is the practical one and is focused on the echolocation of the selected species and their subspecies of the group P. pipistrellus. By analysing 11 different parameters of their echolocation calls I tried to find out if values are more similar in the related species, which is the main theory of most scientists and if there are differences between two main lineages. My results didn´t support this theory because the values for related species were quite different and the differences between lineages were significant almost every time. During analysing we also discovered two different phonotypes in the locality Morocco.
