Akhenaten's religious reform

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je Achnatonova náboženská reforma, která ve 14. století před Kristem vedla v Egyptě k zavedení víry v jediného boha Atona a potlačení celého egyptského pantheonu. Cílem bakalářské práce je představit amarnskou revoluci, interpretovat události, které k ní vedly, jako i důvody, které vedly k jejímu rychlému úpadku. Pro tento účel je v práci sledována nábožensko-politická linie sledující kult boha Amona, který byl v průběhu amarnské revoluce nejvíce potlačovaným bohem. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena do tří hlavních částí. První část analyzuje náboženství a politiku v průběhu 18. dynastie a pro lepší uchopení popisuje specifika egyptského náboženství. Dalším důležitým prvkem je poté vzrůstající moc boha Amona. Druhá část bakalářské práce analyzuje vládu Amenhotepa IV. Je zde představen také bůh Aton, stejně jako Amenhotepovy snahy o oslabení Amonovy moci. V pátém roce své vlády si Amenhotep IV. změnil jméno na Achnaton a v šestém roce své vlády započal stavbu nového sídelního města Achetatonu. V průběhu amarnské revoluce se Achnatonovi podařilo ve svých rukou soustředit veškerou náboženskou moc. Achnaton byl jediný, kdo znal Atonovy záměry a zároveň byl jediným garantem posmrtného života. Amarnská revoluce také přinesla změny v umění a architektuře, které jsou v bakalářské práci komparovány s původním uměním a architekturou starověkého Egypta. O konci Achnatonovy vlády a o jeho smrti nemáme prakticky žádné zprávy. Po Achnatonově smrti opět začal stoupat význam boha Amona a atonismus začal upadat v zapomnění. Ve třetí části bakalářské práce je představena vláda Achnatonových nástupců Tutanchamona, Aje a Haremheba. Je zřejmé, že víra v Atona nepřežila Achnatona o více než pár let, což značí její těsnou spjatost s osobou panovníka.

Abstract:

The object of this bachelor's thesis is Akhenaten's religious reform in ancient Egypt, which implemented belief in one God Aton in polytheistic Egypt. The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to introduce the Amarna revolution times, the reasons which preceded the revolution, and the reasons which led to the quick fall of atonism. In the bachelor's thesis the religion-politics line of Amun's cult is followed, as Amun was the most restrained and haunted God during the Amarna period. This bachelor's thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part analyses the religion and politics of the 18th dynasty, and describes the specific details of the religious life of old Egyptians for better understanding. Another important element is the increasing power of God Amun. The second part of this bachelor's thesis analyses the reign of king Amenhotep IV. The God Aton is introduced, as well as Amenhotep's efforts of suppressing God Amun in Karnak. In the fifth year of his reign, Amenhotep IV changed his name to Akhenaten and in the sixth year of his reign, Akhenaten started to build a new city of residence, Akhetaten. During the Amarna period, Akhenaten concentrated all religious power in his hands. He was the only one who knew Aten's intentions and guaranteed the afterlife. The Amarna revolution brought changes in architecture and art. Both of these spheres were compared with the original architecture and art in ancient Egypt in this thesis. We know very little about the end of the Akhenaten's reign and his death. The power of God Amun started increasing after Akhentaten, and atonism faded into oblivion. In the third part of this bachelor's thesis, the reigns of Akhenaten's successors Tutankhamun, Ay and Horemheb and the fall of atonism are introduced. It is obvious that the belief in Aten did not survive Akhenaten by more than few years, which indicates its close connection with the person of the king.
